This study, aiming to look into translation and history of acceptance aspects of the science fictions(hereafter referred to as ‘sci-fi’) translated in the 1920s colonial Joseon, empirically analyzed respective works’ translation subject, path, method, aspect, context, and meaning. In order to analyze political attributes of the sci-fi from ‘Cognitive estrangement’ perspective, this study aimed to comprehend respective texts based on the background of after the First World War and the 1919 Independence Movement. The target of this study is Western science fictions published during historical upheaval. After a number of sci-fi were translated during the 1920s colonial Joseon, it led to visualizing ideal future society and created a sort of ‘Utopianism’.
Chapter Ⅱ identified that the double translation mediator was Toshihiko Sakai by analyzing “The New Society of Ideals”, which translated Edward Bellamy’s Looking Backward. There were many works double translated by Sakai. As a double translation case, “Ideal Life of Men and Women”, which translated News from Nowhere―a rewriting of Looking Backward―, it was Sakai who was the mediator. In addition, Sakai played an instrumental role in analyzing Jeong Yeon-gyu’s The Ideal Village. Chapter Ⅱ paid attention to firstly, accessibility to world literature through Sakai. secondly, the point that the phenomenon of rewriting utopian novels took place in East Asian country, and lastly, the aspect that translation and rewriting phenomenon took place in reverse order during the colonial Joseon. The chapter examined the colonial Joseon translation features in which the future of ‘State socialism’ and ‘Anarchism’ was divided based on the possibility of ‘Revolution’. Also, it identified the point that the works by Edward Bellamy and William Morris were introduced in the colonial Joseon amid the global ‘Reconstruction’ trend. The Ideal Village by Jeong Yeon-gyu was a text which combined three novels and the narrative blended modern utopian novel aspects and non-modern aspects.
Chapter Ⅲ examined introduction of Herbert George Wells. Unlike previous studies which focused on The Time Machine, this study focuses on the two moments of 1920 and 1926 when it was translated, and analyses the outlines of literature on Wells which was formed at these periods. Even though H. G. Wells is widely known as a sci-fi writer today, thinker aspects were important back in the 1920s. This can be identified from translation of Salvaging of Civilization and reading aspects of The Outline of History. By paying attention to ‘The Utopia I Want’―a submitted work for the contest commemorating the first issue of magazine Dong-Gwang, it has been identified that “Modern Ideal Society”―the translation of A Modern Utopia by H. G. Wells―and “The Tower”―the translation of The Tower by Warwick Draper―were retranslated based on The Story of Utopia(ユウトピア物語, 1920) by Setsuzo Ino. The sci-fi translations published in Dong-Gwang mainly dealt with advance of individuals and society and put emphasis on the necessity of education. Also, it has been identified that the ‘Reconstruction’ trend continued in the process. By analyzing “Can Ideal Country Become a Reality?” by Hyun-Ae, which had not been discussed in the introduction history of H. G. Wells, the fact that Men Like Gods was shortened and introduced has been identified. Based on the discussions in Chapter Ⅲ, this study identified the phenomenon that intellects of the time paid attention to H. G. Wells and sci-fi.
Chapter IV paid attention to the novels by Jules Verne, Robert Louis Stevenson, Jack London, and Jonathan Swift translated into Korean. Chapters Ⅱ and Ⅲ mostly dealt with texts which anticipate optimistic future whereas Chapter Ⅳ aimed to comprehend ideal of civilization and progress and underlying frustration and collapse. Ideal form of progress which can be reached through development of science technology in A Trip to the Moon by Shin Tae-ak that translated De la Terre à la Lune(From the Earth to the Moon) and Autour de la Lune(Around the Moon) by Jules Verne has been identified. On the contrary, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Mrs. Underwood tried to show the possibility of progress functioning not as salvation. In particular, the focus was on distinct character of ‘Personalized’ Korean translated text by looking deeply into the translation style by Mrs. Underwood. It has been found that the Korean version of “The Minions of Midas” was based on the Japanese version by Ritsujiro Wake. Here, the novel was comprehended from the perspective of beginning of dystopia toward utopia and aimed to comprehend proletarian revolution, possibility of strife, and boundary of violence. Gulliver’s Travels by Koh Jang-hwan was translated based on the Japanese version by Hirosuke Hamada and it explored possibility and impossibility of utopia which reappeared in the late 1920s by focusing on ‘Satire’.
Consequently, this study is meaningful in the sense that it provided a series of lists―something like genealogy―by analyzing sci-fi which were translated in the 1920s. In this process, double translation paths were identified by empirically examining the paths of translation and as a result, expanded our understanding on the double translation paths during the Japanese colonial era. Furthermore, it has been found that novels focused on ‘utopia’ as their theme were translated based on optimistic belief and anticipation toward future. In sci-fi translation, there underlay firstly, the context in which ‘Reconstruction’ of individuals and society was requested and secondly, the aspect of ‘Socialism as knowledge’ in a supplementing relationship. In conclusion, just like ‘utopia’ has ambivalent attributes, anxiety underlies hope. This study called such an aspect ‘Utopianism’ of the 1920s colonial Joseon.
