This study aims to examine whether social performance, the ultimate purpose of social enterprises, can predict job satisfaction of individuals through empirical verification of the impact of social enterprises on job satisfaction of individuals. To achieve the purpose of this study, we first review the characteristics and social performance of social enterprises, the theoretical background of job satisfaction of social enterprises, and consider prior studies on the impact of social enterprises' social performance on job satisfaction.
In order to collect data for this study, a survey was conducted on 13 social enterprises whose 2020 social value performance reports have been posted on the website of the Korea Social Enterprise Promotion Agency and 87 social enterprises that have been certified and conducting self-management disclosures in 2017-2019, focusing on Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Incheon. Collected data were conducted frequency analysis, technical statistics analysis, T-test, one-way distribution analysis, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis using statistical program SPSS 25.0.
The results of this study showed that, first, job satisfaction was higher at age 40 and under 50 compared to other age groups as a result of verifying differences in job satisfaction based on demographic characteristics of social enterprise workers. Depending on the position, the head of department showed higher job satisfaction than other positions.
Second, a hierarchical regression analysis) of the impact of social achievements by social enterprises on the job satisfaction of individual workers showed that social achievements by social enterprises (the degree of employment of the vulnerable class, the degree of development and contribution of the community, and the degree of provision of social services) have a significant impact on individual employees' job satisfaction (interest in duties, empowerment of duties, and salary).
Based on these findings, the following implications were drawn. First, it is necessary to pay attention to the social performance of social enterprises in order to increase the job satisfaction of social enterprise workers. Second, the top and middle managers of social enterprises are responsible for maintaining and improving the job satisfaction of their employees, so they should be aware of the importance of the social performance of social enterprises. Accordingly, continuous education on the importance of social performance is needed for top and middle managers. Third, the social value index (SVI) developed to more objectively evaluate the social performance of a social enterprise raises the question of the availability, reliability and equity of measurement, so measures shall be taken to measure social performance by reflecting the situation of each social enterprise.
