This paper is a study on the meaning of Baekdaedudaegan[白頭大幹] and geographical names mainly based on the Sankyongpyo[山經表], which was widely known as the 'Mountain Genealogy' of Korea. Also bibliographic research of the Sankyongpyo is an essential process in order to solve the problem-by whom and when the Sankyongpyo was made- that has been raised since 1990s by some geographers and a few mountaineers.

Although the Baekdudaegan system was prohibited in 1910 by Japanese colonial policy in order to annihilate the independent spirit of Korean people, it has been a geography recognition system of Joseon dynasty era and still now it's not changed in modern Korea. But most of all geographers does not know what the Baekdudaegan is, and in some case it was misunderstood as a kind of mountain range that current Taebaek mountain range system should be substituted. But such kind of argument is not appropriate in the viewpoint of human and historical geography because Baekdudaegan is not only a characteristic mountain range system but also a kind of nature recognition system through daily lives of Korean people. At least over three hundred years, the concept of Baekdudaegan has been used by governors and literati of Joseon dynasty through their books of history, geography and literature, and also we can find complete maps of that time containing 15 ranges of Baekdudaegan system with over three hundred county seats of Joseon dynasty.

The first Baekdudaegan is found on the Honilkangri-yeokdaekugdo map [混壹疆理歷代國都之圖] built by Kim Sa Hyeong, Lee Moo, and Lee Hoi in 1402. Since that time, the major complete maps of Joseon used to contain rivers and mountains showing Baekdudaegan concept in an incomplete pattern. The perfect one of them is the Dongkugdaejido[東國大地圖] built by Jeong Sang Ki in 1740 in which 15 ranges of Baekdudaegan are depicted in detail and precisely with major county seats. Not only maps, but also such history books as the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty[朝鮮王朝 實錄] show Mt. Baekdu and Baekdudaegan. Or some history books and encyclopedia written by private authors used also Jeongkan[正幹] and Jeongmaek[正脉] as the concept of Baekdudaegan. Even in literary works like poems, letters and mountaineering essays[山水遊記], many Joseon literati regarded the concept of Baekdaedugan as a general knowledge. Although they did not use the word Baekdudaegan but described it as a mountain range from Mt. Baekdu to Mt. Jiri, or partially from Mt. Baekdu to Mt. Keumkang. At last, in 1769, Shin Kyong Jun edited Yeojipyeonram in which the system of Baekdudaegan was completed and the names of 1 Daegan, 1 Jeongkan, 13 Jeongmaeks were used for the first time. In 1770, Shin Kyong Jun took part in the project of editing Dongkugmoonheonbiko [東國文獻備考] with other seven scholars under the order of King Yeongjo, and he took full charge of 17 volume Yeojiko[輿地考]. Based on his Yeojipyeonram, Shin Kyong Jun could finish it within several months. Also he proposed King Yeongjo to make full set of maps, Dongkugyeojido[東國 輿之圖] and could accomplished them in two months based on the representative maps of Jeong Sang Ki and Jeong Cheol Jo.

Though the "National Classical Comprehensive List[국가고전적종합목록]" shows 25 Sankyongpyo, 19 of them are same printed books published by Choi Nam Sun in 1913 except six handwriting copies of Joseon dynasty.
Through this study, 11 more manuscript copies could be added to the list. So at least 2020, there are 17 manuscript copies of the Sankyongpyo in Korea. All of them were copied through three stages after 1800, but the original one, Yeojipyeonram[輿地編覽] edited by Shin Kyong Jun in 1769, has not been found until now. There are only its manuscript copies, Sankyongpyo and Jeongripyo[程里表] at the Jangseokag of the Academy of Korean Studies. Another Yeojipyeonram, six volume of Joseon cartography books are in the possession of the Jeongkadang Library[静嘉堂文庫(せいか どうぶんこ)], Japan, since 1924, which were also edited by Shin Kyong Jun under the order of King Yeongjo[奉命申景濬撰] in 1769. So the eight volume of Yeojipyeonram might be built by Shin Kyong Jun in 1769 simultaneously, and six of them must be leaked to Japan between the year of 1910 and 1924.

In order to sort and analyze Baekdudaegan geographical names, the manuscript copy of Yeojipyonram Sankyongpyo and printed one in 1913 were used as a text. There are about 1,600 geographical names in the Sankyongpyo. Mainly they are mountains and passess. But about 300 administrative geographical names in the book were not contained. This study is the first case to include such administrative ones and to make a criteria for classification standard. Thus two categories were adopted, one is a classification by episememe(the back place names morpheme, Category Ⅰ), the other is by morpheme(the front place names morpheme, Category Ⅱ). Three medium(second) levels such as natural, human, and administrative geographical names belong to Category Ⅰ, and six medium (second)levels such as Eol[얼], astronomyㆍmeteorology, location, feng shui, religion, ecology geographical names belong to Category Ⅱ. Through theses categorization and classification work, it came out that the geographical names of Baekdudaegan have various background of a ritual for the worship of the heavenly gods[天祭], folk religion, mountain worship, Jinsan[鎭山], geomancy, Buddhism and Confucianism.

The major findings of this study are as follows.

First, there are 17 manuscript copies of Sankyongpyo in Korea, and the "National Classical Comprehensive List" including only six ones sould be corrected adding 11 more manuscript ones. There can be found no original Sankyongpyo built by Shin Kyong Jun yet.

Second, the manuscript ones were copied through three stages since 1800. The early stage copies did not have headnotes. They were copied through

Third, in 1769, Shin Kyong Jun edited the Yeojipyonram – six volume of Joseon cartography under the order of King Yeongjo. They are original books in the possession of Jeongkadang Library in Japan since 1924. Simultaneously, Shin Kyong Jun edited Sankyongpyo and Jeongripyo, and the two books having one same title, Yeojipyonram, are in the possession of Jangseokag in Korea. So, Yeojipyonram edited by Shin Kyong Jun in 1769 might be an eight volume book.

Fourth, the Yeojipyonram of Jangseokag is not original but manuscript copy built after 1800. Moreover, the copying time and transcriber of Sankyongpyo is different from that of Jeongripyo. Even in the viewpoint of bibliography, the cover of two books is not same.

Fifth, the Sankyongpyo is not only 'Mountain Genealogy' of Korea but also a kind of nature recognition system with major county seats[邑治] and Jinsans[鎭山]. This system and Baekdudaegan concept have been developed for over one thousand years since Unification Shilla era, and completed by Shin Kyong Jun’s editing Sankyongpyo in 1769.

Sixth, the geographical names of Baekdudaegan can be categorized largely by two classification standard, the front place names morpheme and the back place names morpheme. Through this categorization and classification work, it came out that the geographical names of Baekdudaegan have various backgrounds since very early in the history. Especially, such spiritual ones as heaven[天], white[白], sun[日], east[東] are reflected in the geographical names of Mt. Baekdu[白頭山] and Baekdudaegan[白頭大幹] as the front place names morpheme.
