This study is to examine the mediating effects of the mentalization and emotional experience on the relationship between adult attachment and stress coping method, and provide implications for adaptive stress coping method.
For this study, Middle-aged men and women living in Seoul and Gyounggi and Chungnam and Sejong and Gangwon and Chungcheong participated in a survey offline and online. Finally, a total of 600 data were used for research analysis.
Looking at the research tools used in this study, The first, research tool to measured adult attachment used the Experiences in Close Relationship Questionnaire-Revised: ECR-R by Fraley et al(2000), which was translated by Kim, Sung-hyun(2004). Second, to measured stress coping method used the Coping Strategy Indicator: CSI by Amirkhan(1990), which was translated and justified by Kim, Chang-dae and Shin, Hae-jin(2002). Third, research tool to measured mentalization used the Self-Rated Mentalization Questionnaire: SRMQ by Park, Se-mi(2016), which based on Fonagy’s reflection function. Lastly, to measured emotional experience used the Positive Affect Negative Affect Scale: PANAS by Watson et al(1988), which was translated and justified by Park, hong-seok and Lee, Jeong-mi(2016).
The analysis was conducted using SPSS 22.0 for frequency analysis, reliability analysis of measurement tool, descriptive statistics, T-test and One-Way ANOVA, Pearson correlation analysis, multiple regression analysis. Also, PROCESS Macro is applied to tested the significance of mediating effect using bootstrapping.
The summary of this study was as follows.
First, there was a differences in positive stress coping according to the sociodemographic variables, gender and educational background.
Second, unstable adult attachment showed a negative relationship with adaptive stress coping method. Also There was no significant correlation between attachment anxiety in stress coping with social support seeking, but attachment avoidance had the greatest correlation. In addition, the attachment avoidance had a relatively bigger negative influence on adaptive stress coping method than anxiety dimension.
Third, as a result of analyzing the relative influences of the major variables influence the positive stress coping method, attachment avoidance had the greatest effect, and it influenced the positive coping method in the order of mentalization, attachment avoidance, and positive emotions.
Fourth, mentalization showed a negative relationship with negative emotions, showed a positive relationship with positive emotions.
Fifth, mentalization exerted partially mediating role in the relationship between unstable adult attachment and adaptive coping.
Finally, positive or negative emotional experience exerted partially mediating role in the relationship between unstable adult attachment and adaptive coping.
The significance of this study was as follows. First of all, this study showed the psychological process for adaptive stress coping in people with high levels of unstable adult attachment. And By confirming the mediating effect of mentalization and emotional experience, established a theoretical basis that intervention for mentalization and emotional experience is necessary for adaptive stress coping.
