The study aimed to examine the transition and meaning of the marine sports program in the Naval Academy. We applied the methods of documentary research and analyzed to achieve these goals.
The results of this study are as follows. First, we explored the early marine sports program (1946~1978) and examined its meaning. We were able to learn that swimming was the only course in marine sports subjects. In the marine sports class of the sports club activities, there were swimming and pulling boat classes in 1946 and the yachting class started. In 1970, a rowing class was established and four classes were run: swimming, pulling boat, yachting, and rowing. The record of the combat swimming training was confirmed from the『yearbook』 of the first graduating class published in 1946. There was no marine sports practical training in military education.
Second, we explored the marine sports program of the growth period (1979~2009) and examined its meaning. In 1979, it was confirmed that the cutter, rowing, and yachting were added to the existing swimming course, and in 1993, the cutter course was removed and the scuba diving course was added. In 2000, there were seven courses: swimming, scuba diving, rowing, water-skiing, windsurfing, canoeing, and yachting. In 2005, water-skiing was eliminated and emergency first aid was added. The yachting course was divided into yacht Ⅰ and Ⅱ. Yacht Ⅰ was a dinghy and Yacht Ⅱ was a cruising. In 2007, we were able to confirm that marine sports courses were changed to only two subjects, swimming and yachting (dinghy, cruising, and windsurfing). In 2009, there were two courses, swimming and an introduction to marine sports. In the sports club activities, there were the cutter, rowing, yachting, and scuba diving in marine sports classes until the 1980s. In the 1990s, there was no more cutter, seven classes were run: rowing, canoeing, yachting, windsurfing, swimming, scuba diving and water-skiing. The sailing class was added in 2000, the water-skiing disappeared in 2006, and the sailing class changed the name to cruising class, there were seven classes in total. Combat swimming program was carried out unchanged from the beginning. The marine sports practical training in military education has begun in 2007, it helped to develop the marine survival capacity through scuba diving and to acquire related qualifications.
Finally, we explored the last stage of the marine sports program (from 2010 to the present) and examined its meaning. In 2012, marine sports courses consisted of three subjects: swimming, marine sports Ⅰ and Ⅱ. Rowing and cruising are taught in marine sports Ⅰ and windsurfing and yachting are taught in marine sports Ⅱ. In 2015, marine sports Ⅰ and Ⅱ were eliminated, and the courses were reorganized: swimming, yachting, rowing, cruising, and windsurfing. They are still operation until 2020. In the sports club activities, the marine sports class consisted of yachting, cruising, windsurfing, rowing, swimming, and scuba diving in 2010. However, the scuba diving class disappeared in 2016, and it consists of five classes: yachting, cruising, windsurfing, rowing, and swimming. The class has been preserved to the present. Combat swimming training has been still carried out until now since the first graduating class (1946). In the military education, the marine sports practical training was conducted in one subject, rescue diving training, but in 2019, yacht training was added and has been maintained in two subjects, rescue diving and yacht training until now.
