This thesis focuses on the geopolitical aspects inherent in Journal of the Tokyo Geographical Society, identifying the overall image of Tokyo Geographical Society, and reconsidering the collection, accumulation and sharing of foreign information, and revealing the nature of Japan's perception in the late 19th century. Specifically, by analyzing the geographical descriptions of the 1870s and 1890s on Journal of the Tokyo Geographical Society of Japan's first geographical group, it seeks to identify the characteristics of geographical perception in Japan's process of establishing a modern state and moving toward imperialism. It is meaningful as a prehistory of modern geography and imperial geography, understanding the nature of geographical society at a time when modern geography was not established.
Tokyo Geographical Society is a closed social and academic organization, but it is meaningful as a space where geographical information from all parts of the world is shared in Japan in the late 19th century. Tokyo Geographical Society formed a network of geographical information focusing on collecting information from countries around the world. In particular, It tried to gain face internationally as a geographic society in Japan by making efforts to exchange with foreign organizations. Tokyo Geographical Society was the most active international exchange organization in Japan at the end of the 19th century. Therefore, Tokyo Geographical Society is a private organization, but it actually functions as an external part of the government and played a role in collecting and accumulating domestic and international information.
According to an analysis of the area and contents of Journal of the Tokyo Geographical Society, Japan's geographical perspective expands north to Joseon, Manchuria, Maritime Province, China, Russia, and neighboring Asia, and to the south to the Pacific and Americas. The expansion of geographical vision centered on Japan is Japan's expansion of its interest line from a diplomatic, economic and military perspective in response to the international situation in the 19th century, and embodied its imperialist perspective and attitude internally. This is a change in Japan's mental map in the late 19th century.
In particular, considering the location and relationship of Honshu, Hokkaido, and Russia, the relationship between the three parties is centered on Tokyo and the center-periphery structure is a multilayered extension. Amid the global situation in which modernization and imperialism are pursued in the 19th century, domestic and foreign situations are organically related, and the center-periphery structure is expanded. Through him, the perspective of discriminating against oneself and others around him is internalized and a domination-subordination relationship is formed that is justified by the image of civilization-barbarism.
In the late 19th century, the Japanese government sought to establish itself as a modern country in response to international situations and developed various national management policies. In response, Tokyo Geographical Society expanded its geographical interest and perspective on areas, boundaries, and economic interests and collected information. In the process, the center-periphery structure is expanded to connect Japan and its surrounding countries organically and internalize the views and attitudes of imperialism. It collected and accumulated geographical information on areas that will be expanded to so-called profit lines such as Joseon, Taiwan, and Manchuria. Furthermore, it has expanded its geographical interest and perspective to Asia, the Pacific, and America by focusing on economy and colonization based on Western imperialism. t served as an intellectual background for Japan's occupation of the Sino-Japanese War in 1894 and its territorial expansion directly and indirectly. Tokyo Geographical Society provided geographical articles from various regions through the Journal of the Tokyo Geographical Society, and laid the intellectual foundation for expanding Japan's geographical perspective and reestablishing mental maps in the late 19th century.
