This research has its purpose to look into the correlation between Myeongli theories and diseases with a basis on such the long-inherited Myeongli texts as 『Yeon-hae-ja-pyeong(淵海子平)』, 『Jeok-cheon-su(滴天髓)』, 『Sam-myeong-tong-heo(三命通會)』 and 『Hyundai-myeongli-yeo-jung-ui(現代命理與中醫)』. These above are four major and essential texts, which represent distinctive achievements in Myeongli history, ranging from the Chinese Song era to modern society. Each of these text has its own disease chapter that explains the reasons, internal/external environments, the flow of smooth and tough lucks affecting on likelihood of physical and mental disorders. Contrasted to other existing researches, the distinct point of this research is its additional close-look into the relations between Saju and mental disorders, let alone dealing with the physical ones.
This research suggests the fundamental theories of Yin-Yang as a background which can back up the correlations between body disorders and Saju. Especially, this research excludes subsidiary theories like Gi-shin(忌神), Hyung-shin(凶神), Hui-shin(喜神), which are supposedly utilized containing so much of one’s subjective views, not firmly established and widely generalized.
To say the conclusion of this research, one can predict and identify causes and effects of one’s physical and mental disorders from Saju, mainly based on the Yin-Yang and Five-energy theory. To give details about core conclusions, a variety of Chinese medical researches have been worked on, and there were notable commons leading to the relevancy between Saju and Chinese medical practices. It is not unusual for Chinese medical practitioners to study on Myeongli, or Saju in order to find out its association with causes of disease.
In terms of Myeongli theory, one outstanding cause that has a great impact both on physical and psychological aspects can be explained by conflicts of Su(수) and Hwa(화) energies. If these two factors are not in harmony, it is highly likely to show an unusual physical and psychological responses and reactions, both internally and externally.
The four texts, mentioned above, which are bases of this research, also refers to this point of Su(수) and Hwa(화) as a main factor of mental and physical disorders. On top of this, other causality between Myeongli theory and diseases has been studied; among Five Energies(木, 火, 土, 金, 水), if one energy, like Geom(金), gets too much power, and thus leads to unbalance, one can get a disease related to bone and spine. Also, if Su(水) energy gets so much bigger breaking the balance of Five Energies, one can be predicted to suffer from a kind of hormone-and-blood-related unusual disorders. In this case, they include some mental disorders like depression and melancholy.
It is highly vital to keep the balance between Five Energies so as to stay healthy, psychologically and physically. The last one word can be heard from this research ringing from the first to end is “keep the balance in life”. This is the gist of Saju Myeongli theory, which also can be a core of this research, is the only way not to suffer from diseases and to get around them.
Myeongli has its basis on Yin-Yang and energy(氣; gi) theories, which argue that this universe can be explained by two contrasting pairs of phenomena(darkness and brightness; Yin-Yang) and five cohesive and symbolic energies(木, 火, 土, 金, 水). So, human beings are born to have these energies and can’t avoid the impact of these universal energies and thus human beings can get weaker or stronger, mentally and physically, depening on the changes in these energies. In order for us to understand this point of view, researches on Yin-Yang and Five Energies have been implemented on the early parts of this thesis.
People are the beings that can’t be separated apart from other people and circumstances, and can’t thought as solely independent entities. Dependent on other people and environment, people are meant to affect each other and interact with their own energies. This is the point of this research that we can keep the balance and health of our body and mind by identifying these interacting energies and by predicting the causes and factors, which may have effect on a certain person. According to the texts researched on this thesis, there are specific and certain timings and/or causes triggering mental and physical disorders. Through further studies, more cases related to this correlation between Myeongli theories and diseases can be found, and it is definitely worth for human studies.
