Exhibitions were a symbol of modernization in the first half of the 20th
century. Various shows were held nationwide including Gyeongseong.
Student art exhibitions were also held across the country, which had
become more widespread since 1930. For instance, “Male and Female
Student Art Exhibition across Joseon” was held nine times by the large
newspaper company Dong-A Ilbo over the period of about 10 years from
1929 to 1940. This study intended to focus on student art exhibitions,
which have not been studied enough compared to general exhibitions and
student art in modern times. In the study, the operating system and
characteristics of the student art exhibitions held by the Dong-A Ilbo and
the Chosun Ilbo were investigated, the trends of art works that had
received awards at the exhibitions were compared with the Joseon Art
Exhibition, which was at the center of the contemporary art world, in
order to explore the role and significance of the student art exhibitions.
In 1929, the Dong-A Ilbo held a student art exhibition for the
development of student art. Each year, 3,000-5,000 various entries were
submitted from across the country, and the scale of the exhibitions had
grown and developed. Following this, in 1936, the Chosun Ilbo also
started its student art exhibition, further expanding the role of student art
exhibitions. The two exhibitions were judged by prestigious artists, such
as Go Hui-dong and Lee Han-bok. They were operated and advertised
through the newspaper media containing various contents, mostly by the
division of arts. As the student art exhibitions became more famous,
students and teachers got more passionate and competitive about winning
the prizes, and the quality of students’ artworks also further improved.
The growth and development of the student art exhibitions revealed that
they had played the role of an art system in the absence of an art
system for students. This study also explored the exhibitions, which had been held for about
10 years, through news articles on the Dong-A Ilbo and the Chosun Ilbo.
Several interviews and editorials on the newspapers explained students'
motivations for participating in the exhibitions and their acceptance
speeches as well as the relationship between students and their teachers.
The teachers were active painters who had studied in Tokyo or come
from Japan. In particular, Thomas Chang, an art teacher of Whimoon High
School, displayed his competence as an educator by nurturing many
student artists. Greatly influenced by Chang, his students produced
exhibition entries. In addition, the newspapers showed that major modern
and contemporary painters had been awarded at the student art
exhibitions, which helped understand the academic nature of the
exhibitions based on their artworks during school years and at the
beginning of professional career. In the institutionalized drawing
education, the students’ art entries showed similar trends, but they had
grown into painters with their own uniqueness. In conclusion, this study aimed to explore two aspects. First, it tried to
discover the role and significance of the student art exhibitions when
there was no specialized art school unlike Japan; they played a role of
academies to encourage students to pursue arts. The Dong-A Ilbo highly
recognized the exhibition by saying "It is for sure that art is the most
proper education in developing students' creativity and contributes to the
development of child art." As such, it seems that the student art
exhibitions of the Dong-A Ilbo and the Chosun Ilbo had led the
development of child art. A number of students from all over the country
participated in the exhibitions, and 10 major artists who were active in
the modern and contemporary era were found among the top
award-winners of the exhibitions, where only less than 20 winners were
selected for each competition. As a result, it was confirmed that the
student art exhibitions played a key role in producing major artists in the
modern and contemporary era. Next, this study aimed to see the connection between the student art
exhibitions and the Joseon Art Exhibition and to explore the early works
of major modern and contemporary painters as students. After comparing
the entries of the student art exhibitions and the Joseon Art Exhibition, it
was found that landscape, still life, and portrait paintings showed similar
trends. This indicates that the student art exhibitions preferred the
painting styles pursued by the arts industry at the time. Modern and
contemporary artists who won the student art exhibitions include Lee
    Que-de, Chang Uc-chin, Park Hang-seop, Park Sang-ok, Kim Man-hyung,
    Lee Bong-sang, Kim Jong-young, Seung Dong-pyo, Choi Duk-hyu, and
Choi Young-rim. It was able to see their art works as students although
most available images were black and white. Based on these materials,
their early works produced as a result of the institutionalized education
were examined, and this revealed that the student art exhibitions had
affected their artistic career. This study intended to confirm that the student art exhibitions played
the role of encouraging students to be engaged in art activities and
nurturing future artists, rather than being simply entertaining events for
students, and then eventually produced the prominent artists in the
    modern and contemporary era.
