Confucian schools and Seowons, two major educational institutions in the Joseon dynasty, played roles to demonstrate order and moderation of Confucianism and to develop talents by Feng Shui topography as the coexisting space with the perspectives of Confucianism and Feng Shui.
Hence, with respect to the locations, orientations, and architectures of two traditional educational institutions, this study was aimed to review how Confucian schools and Seowons were expressed differently with the selection criteria of Feng Shui topography for local officers and noblemen to receive the wisdom from the mountain range; to seek the utilization status and plans of Confucian schools and Seowons that had maintained their position as serving places of ancestors for some scholars; and to find out the useful implications of the architectures for educational institutions.
To do so, 8 Confucian schools and 5 Seowons in the local administrative cities were investigated as the study subjects including Confucian schools in Seonggyungwan, Naju, Jeonju, Sangju, Gyungju, Cheongju, Chungju, and Chuncheon; and Sosoo, Dosan, Byungsan, Pilam, and Museong Seowons, respectively.
They were divided by Confucian schools and Seowons first, and general characteristics, spatial functions, organization, and Feng Shui location were reviewed for both Confucian schools and Seowons. Differences were also reviewed and lastly, their utilization status and plans were approached.
The study results are as follows.
First, the biggest difference between Confucian schools and Seowons was the organizer, either public or private. With respect to the foundation period, Confucian schools had been originated from the Goryeo dynasty and they were established at the local counties in King Seongjong, the Joseon dynasty while Seowons were originated in the 16th century of the Joseon dynasty. Main functions of Confucian schools were memorial service for the ancestors as a top priority followed by pursuit studies and reforming society. Seowons functioned pursuit studies first followed by memorial service for the ancestors and they played roles as public libraries for the communities. In terms of locations, Confucian schools were located in downtown near the local government offices while Seowons were located in the uncrowded areas with good scenery.
Second, with regard to differences of the function of serving the past scholars and space, Confucian schools prioritized serving the past scholars including Confucius, 4 Wes, 10 Cheols, and national 18 Hyuns while Seowons served one scholar representing their schools. Therefore, Confucian schools served separating them into Daesungjeon, the East, and the West since the ancestors were many, and Seowons served them in the shrine.
With respect to the allocations of architectures, there were allocation criteria in Confucian schools including Jeonmyowhohak, Jeonhakwhomyo, Jwamyowoohak, and Woohakjwamyo based on Daesungjeon and Myungryundang as the spaces for ancestor service and studies, respectively, and they prioritized Daesungjeon to serve the ancestors.
Since the number of ancestors to be served in Seowons was not many, the shrine was located deep inside without exposure in front.
Third, the hierarchical order was strictly divided in the spatial composition of the lecture function and orientation function. The Ganghak space is a space for directly exchanging the teachings of Confucianism, and the Orientation space is a training space that reflects the teachings of the predecessors through rituals.
Fourth, related to the locations, Confucian schools were located within 1 to 3 Ri out of fortress from the local government office, and they were not located in the Southern part of the government office. This was not to interfere each other since the government office was located as Jajwaohyang. Confucian schools were located in the east or west of the government office following separate vein, and they did not follow Jajwaohyang with clean area of Daesungjeon. On the other hand, Seowons were located in the calm and noncrowded areas without affecting the government office following separate vein, and they followed Jajwaohyang, reflecting its preference by scholars in Joseon. Allocation of auditorium in Seowons at the caves implicated they empathized pursuit studies.
Fifth, with respect to the differences of utilization status as the cultural tourism, Confucian schools were designated as ‘treasures’ or ‘local cultural properties,’ while 9 Seowons were enlisted as ‘UNESCO World Cultural Heritages’ in 2019.
In terms of education, both institutions focused on personality education commonly, while the students were children and general public for Confucian schools and multiple targets were for Seowons including children, adolescents, adults, foreigners, and so on connecting with cultural tourism.
For future development plans, Korean Seowon Integrative Conservation Management Corps took the initiatives for succession of Seowons. There is Union of Confucian schools for Confucian schools, however, they showed ununified features with loud voices from each scholar, separately, which made the investigator depressed. They should develop educational and playing programs integrating the technologies of the 4th industrial revolution era so as for the youth to approach them easily without burden.
Keywords: Confucian School, Seowon, Pursuit Studies, Serving the Past Scholars, Daesungjeon, Myungryundang, Blue Dragon, White Tiger, Feng Shui, Shrine.
