The objective of this thesis is to explore the influence of "Jung's Shadow Theory" on the symbolic principle of Healing Tarot cards and to examine whether the process of resolving the shadow and the theory of Healing Tarot are correlated with each other.
Healing Tarot cards are a symbolic system that connects a problematic situation through the symbols of unconsciousness and consciousness. It is not easy to scientifically narrow down a resolution for a problem revealed through a symbolic image on a Healing Tarot card. However, according to Jung's theory, the human mind is rooted in a world of unconsciousness, and human behavior reflects this. Furthermore, Jung states that "the purpose of human life is to unify one’s consciousness and unconsciousness in the process of self-actualization.“
This thesis examines the inner unconscious world in detail through the symbolic images of Healing Tarot cards and studies the potential of these cards being utilized as a "means of self-actualization and pursuit of unifying consciousness and unconsciousness."
According to Jung, there are "personal unconscious" and "collective unconscious" in the unconscious. The layer that stores suppressed feelings, old memories, and unnecessary memories of an individual's life since birth is called the “personal unconscious.” The layer that contains human characteristics that are inherited by nature, which forms the foundation of mind since birth, is called the "collective unconscious."
This thesis studies the "personal unconscious" and "collective unconscious" that form Jung's psychoanalysis theory as well as the archetypes of the collective unconscious such as "anima and animus," "persona," "shadow," and "self." Along the same line, the correlation between "image interpretation of Healing Tarot cards" and "Jung's Shadow Theory" was studied.
This thesis realizes that while the collective unconscious is not composed of human thought and action, and everything that human seeks, everything that exists in the human unconsciousness is composed of one organic relationship. Therefore, the process of studying "Healing Tarot card images" can also be a process of finding the archetype of the unconscious.
Healing Tarot cards are composed of 90 cards. There are 45 conspiracy cards that create a dark shadow in the unconscious and distort pure humanity, and 45 miracle cards that cure the shadow and recover pure humanity. This thesis has affiliated 45 conspiracy card images with "Jung's Shadow Theory" and proposes the possibility of using them to analyze one’s psychological state and to lead one through the process of self-actualization. The basis for this suggestion is that the "image interpretation of Healing Tarot cards" functions as a "guide" to one’s path of self-actualization through the exploration of the unconscious.
It is hoped that the "image interpretation of Healing Cards" studied in this thesis works as a driving force for one to overcome a sense of inferiority formed by the distorted self, restore self-esteem, and furthermore, "achieve self-actualization." Consequently, it is anticipated that this thesis will offer preliminary data to be usefully applied in the counseling field.
