Feng-shui geomancy originated from the nature is an important practical study that is greatly beneficial in real life.
A garden is considered a form of composite art in the application of Feng-shui. As a culture enjoyed by the upper classes in both the East and the West, this garden has a philosophical meaning and thoughts in each of the times and parts of the world. Feng-shui based on the ancient Oriental Thought of Yin-Yang and Five Elements played an important role across our lives with history and tradition in both the East and the West. The reality, however, is that its importance has decreased today and its existence is threatened. Consequently, the present study investigated Garden Feng-Shui to promote it inheritance and development and people’s interest.
Gardens today are important spaces for city dwellers living busy lives and became ecologically important urban elements as well. The East and the West have a different structure in Yang Taek and directivity in pursuing a life. With the continuous increase in the number of apartments, however, common interest in efficiently using natural elements in limited urban spaces tend to increase in both the East and the West. Accordingly, garden-like parks can be seen in residential areas and cities now.
With increased interest in creating urban gardens to use space efficiently, the characteristics of apartment gardens play the role of increasing apartment image and value resulting in having a significant influence on the selection and occupancy of the apartment.
Emotional, visual, and auditory effects can be expected from apartment gardens, and they can be created as optimal comfortable healing spaces in the city that can improve the quality of life, comfortable, and stable resting places in the city due to the circulation of Gi (energy) that vitalizes health if the garden is created using feng shui elements.
The current form of residential environment is different from the past, and to use the elements of modern feng shui, the systematic organization of theories of modern garden feng shui by understanding and applying the flow of hyeong-gi (形氣) and i-gi (理氣) is urgently needed. Previous studies on garden feng shui so far have paid attention to comparative analyses between South Korean and Chinese gardens, but not many studies reinterpreted modern gardens. Accordingly, the present study applied the feng shui perspective to modern-garden feng shui and interpreted through modern-apartment gardens by reviewing literature on the use of garden feng shui in the West and understanding and considering the characteristics of Korean traditional gardens to analyze modern garden feng-shui.
