The purpose of this study was to inquire what non-majored art therapists experienced in creating artworks and how they embodied in art. For the inquiry, Giorgi’s phenomenological research method was adopted to analyze the collected data.
Participants of this inquiry were art therapists who did not study art during their undergraduate or master course. Data were selected from the inquirer’s journals, written interviews, and artworks from November 2019 to February 2020.
The analyzed data by Giorgi’s four-stage analysis method produced seven core components, twenty-one sub-components, and sixty-seven meanings. Seven core components are: <Between resistance and expectation>, <It was hard to create art>, <Communicating with the medium>, <Enjoyed paintings>, <Steadily adjusted>, <Artworks becomes easy>, and <Artworks is the strength of the art therapy>.
The result of embodiment in artworks of the therapists in the inquiry was as follows.
First, these therapists not only experienced resistance and difficulties in performing artworks but also loved to create art. Then, they were passionate about artworks and perceived its importance.
Second, the participants’ embodiment experience resulted in changing their perception for art and growing. They enjoyed performing artworks and experienced their change of attitude to art through sensuous and dynamic experience through immersing in artworks.
Third, the therapists reassure that artworks are a very useful tool. The process of adopting a new media and learning to use it helps to enlarge their perspective and to improve their therapy ability.
The significance of this study was that these therapists who did not study art experienced the change of their perception for art and the growth of ability while exploring their difficulties in creating artworks.
Finally, the inquirer hopes that this inquiry can help non-art majored therapists who occupy a large portion of the art therapy profession and provide some fundamental resources to improve their ability.
