The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of a mindset program using picture books on the mindset and grit of the lower grades of elementary school. The research questions are as follows.
First, is the mindset of the experimental group that applied the mindset program using picture books significantly different from the mindset of the control group?
Second, is the grit of the experimental group that applied the mindset program using the picture book significantly different from that of the control group?
This study was conducted on 3rd grade children who were in the lower grades of S Elementary School in B City, Gyeonggi-Do. A total of 39 subjects were selected, of which 20 were assigned to the experimental group and 19 were assigned to the control group. As a measurement tool for the test, Mindset used the Mindset scale used in the study by Choi Jae-soo(2019), and Grit used the Korean version of the Korean child's grit scale by Kim Hee-myeong and Hwang Mae-hyang(2015).
The mindset program used in this study was reconstructed based on Kim Bo-mi's mindset program(2016), and collected and selected as picture books to help the mindset formation process. The picture book books were modified and supplemented in consideration of the characteristics of the elementary school students and the goals of the program. The program was conducted twice a week for 40 minutes, 4 weeks, and 8 sessions.
In order to verify the effectiveness of the program, an independent sample t-test was conducted on the prior scores between the experimental and control groups for the mindset and grit. As a result of analysis, both groups were judged to be homogeneous because there was no significant difference between the experimental group and the control group in both mindset and grit scores. To find out the effectiveness of the program, jamovi 1.0.8 program was used for statistical processing, and an independent sample t-test was conducted to analyze the results. The results are as follows.
First, as a result of conducting a mindset program using picture books for the lower grades of elementary school, there was no statistically significant difference in the growth mindset between the experimental group and the control group. The fixed mindset of the experimental group was lower than that of the control group. Through this, it can be seen that the mindset program using picture books had a partial effect on changing the mindset of the lower grades of elementary school.
Second, as a result of performing a mindset program using picture books for the lower grades of elementary school, there was no statistically significant difference in maintaining interest in the experimental group and the control group, but the persistence of effort and the grit(total) were statistically significant differences. The experimental group's effort persistence was higher than the control group's effort persistence, and the experimental group's grit(total) was higher than the control group's grit(total). Through this, it can be seen that the mindset program using picture books had a partial effect on changing the grit of the lower grades of elementary school.
Through the above study, it was proved that the mindset program using picture books has a partially significant effect on improving the mindset and grit of elementary school children. This suggests that a mindset program using picture books in the future can be helpful in raising the affirmation of low-grade children and raising a sense of challenge and commitment to life. It is expected that this study will be used as a basic and empirical practical data for teachers in the actual school field.
