This paper takes a different approach from existing viewpoints that hold that a-ak(雅樂) was the outcome of sadae (事大, submission to the stronger) and sog-ak(俗樂) was a revelation of independence. This paper tried to review the music history of the early Joseon Dynasty from the viewpoint that ceremonial music based on parts of Chinese culture and the etiquette of music ideology of Confucianism were accepted after the founding of Joseon Dynasty as a result of the influence of Chinese culture. In addition, this paper focused on the fact that ritual, which is the center of discussion on the use of a-ak and sog-ak, was none other than a Hoe-rye(會禮). The Hoe-rye of Sejong used a-ak and sog-ak together and only used sog-ak after the creation of a sin-ak(新樂). new music. In this paper, the objective was to study the process of creating a new culture by accepting Confucian music-usage(用樂) and ceremonial music while maintaining the continuously performed music of the Joseon Dynasty.
In chapter II, the source and system of Hoe-rye accepted by Joseon was reviewed. The source of Hoe-rye and Hoe-rye music-usage can be found in the Han Dynasty and the structure and music-usage system is clearly shown in the Tang Dynasty. In other words, the Hoe-rye of the Tang era had the structure of Toasting to king’s longevity(上壽禮) and Drinking nine times turn for all participants(行酒禮) and prepared a music-usage system by classifying the bands and tones according to the social status of the performer and ritual implementation time. In this respect, it can be said that the Hoe-rye yongak system, that reflects the Confucian principle that implements the status order and natural order of the Tang era into music, was established. The Hoe-rye of the Song era is practically the same as the system of the Tang era because it is a convention of the Tang era Hoe-rye.
In the Goryeo Dynasty, there were Palgwanhoe(八關會), Daegwanjeon yeongunshin (大觀殿宴群臣), Wonhoe(元會), which have similar characteristics to the Tang Dynasty Hoe-rye. The music-usage of these rituals are different from the Confucian yongak of the Tang Dynasty. In other words, baekhui(百戱) that expresses various religious cultures in a playful way is continuously performed and the Confusion band system was not equipped even when performing a-ak. This means that there was no system using music according to the social order and natural order.
In chapter III, the process of Sejong Hoe-rye music-usage being decided to use a-ak and sog-ak together and the process of being established by accepting the Tang system is reviewed. The power of Joseon was shinjinsadaebu(新進士大夫) that adhered to Confucian ideology and viewed Goryeo Dynasty music - based on Confucian etiquette music - and showed a great interest in a-ak, which is one of the indicators of Chinese culture. As a result, efforts were continuously made to prepare a-ak by requesting instruments for a-ak from the Ming Dynasty and to send musicians to learn a-ak, etc. and this led to the production of a-ak instruments and compilation of a-ak scores. At this time, a-ak was used in various rituals such as ancestral rituals, funerals, etc. and sog-ak was used together with a-ak for only Hoe-rye. This is thought to be because the Hoe-rye takes the association and intimacy of the sovereign and subject as its main purpose and regards the revelation of the sensitivity of the performers as an important ritual.
In chapter IV, only sog-ak that was used for Hoe-rye after the creation of a sin-ak is reviewed and the process of bands beginning to continuously perform sog-ak and items associated with this continuous performance being completely equipped in Seongjong are also reviewed. At the end of Sejong, King Sejong himself created a new music and this new music possessed Tang music and Korean music forms while its use was established based on the Classic of Odes(詩經) as it was created in the context of Confucian music. In addition, a-ak and sog-ak were not classified after Saejo and views on music that integrally appreciate Korean music begin to appear. The a-ak that no longer used for Hoe-rye and only used sog-ak is based on the use of the creation of a new music and integrated views on music.
The Hoe-rye music-usage using only sog-ak after Saejo can be found in the still conference in the「National Book on the Five Rites of Staten the Five Rituals(國朝五禮儀)」and contents of「Illustrated Text on Traditional Music」about holding a feast. The still conference in「National Book on the Five Rituals」did not consider the use of a-ak at all and based on this fact, it can be confirmed that only sog-ak was used for still Hoe-rye. However, the「National Book on the Five Rituals」did not clearly record the names of various bands and musical phenomena that were played in the procedure of yongak. In this regard, in the process of Hoe-rye music-usage changing from a-ak/sog-ak used jointly to the exclusive use of sog-ak, the record of the「National Book on the Five Rituals」has traditional characteristics. As the「Treatise of Music(樂學軌範)」recorded bands and continuously performed items in the form of response to all yongak procedures of still Hoe-rye, it can be said that the establishment of Hoe-rye music-usage in the early Joseon Dynasty is shown in the 「Treatise of Music」.
To sum up, the Hoe-rye music-usage of the early Joseon Dynasty that uses Saejong a-ak/sog-ak jointly, was established by accepting the Tang Dynasty system; Hoe-rye music-usage changes as only sog-ak was used for Hoe-rye after Saejo and the Hoe-rye music-usage of the early Joseon Dynasty was established in Seongjong. When this process is looked into from the aspect of accepting Confucian music-usage, the Tang era Hoe-rye music-usage system was established that realized Confucian principles through the use of bands and tones while using Sejong Hoe-rye a-ak. As sog-ak was exclusively used for Hoe-rye after Saejo, the system of using bands and tones was reorganized. In other words, the system of using a-ak according to the natural order cannot be confirmed after Saejo as sog-ak was used instead of a-ak, which is easy to transpose. The system of using a-ak according to the social/status order can be said to have been newly established by playing Hwangjong-gung(黃鐘宮) <Yeomillak> at the King’s exiting and returning to the palace and as a-ak <Nagyangchun> that is played during the salutation of the servants. In addition, the system of realizing the social order with the use of bands was prepared to meet sog-ak as Jeonjeongheonga(殿庭軒歌)/Jeonhugochwi(殿庭鼓吹), etc. were newly introduced. In this regard, some of the Confucian music-usage system that was established by accepting the music-usage system of Tang Dynasty during Sejong did not function after the exclusive used of sog-ak after Saejo, but that principle was continued and established into the regulation of music and bands that continuously performed sog-ak. The process of establishing the Hoe-rye music-usage of the early Joseon Dynasty in this way accepted the music-usage system prepared based on ceremonial music and Confucian principles as the Joseon was founded under the influence of Chinese culture. Based on this principle, it can be said to be the process of recreating the musical tradition of Joseon to meet a-ak.
