The purpose of the study was to analyze the structural relationships among college students’ perceived family strengths, growth mindset, emotional intelligence, grit and self-directed learning ability. The research questions are as follows.
First, do college students’ perceived family strengths, growth mindset, emotional intelligence and grit influence on ‘self-directed learning ablity’? Second, do college students’ perceived family strengths, growth mindset, and emotional intelligence influence on ‘grit’? Third, do college students’ perceived family strengths and growth mindset influence on ‘emotional intelligence’? Forth, does college students’ perceived family strengths influence on ‘growth mindset’?
The author conducted a questionnaire survey on college students in Korea. A total number 1,360 questionnaires were distributed on-line. and 1,106 questionnaires were collected. Finally 1,020 questionnaires were used for analysis, except for 86, considered insincere. For data analysis, structural equation model was used with SPSS and AMOS.
The findings were as follows. First, college students’ family strengths had a direct negative(-) influence on SDL(self-directed learning) abiliy. but it had a indirect positive influence on SDL ability, mediated by growth mindset and EI(emotional intelligence). Growth mindset affected SDL ability directly and indirectly mediated by EI. EI had a direct effect on SDL ability. But grit did not have a significant effect on SDL ability. Second, family strengths did not have a significant direct effect on grit but had an indirect effect on grit, mediated by growth mindset and EI. Growth mindset affected grit directly. EI also directly affected grit. Third, family strengths affected EI directly. And growth mindset affected EI directly. Forth, family strengths affected growth mindset directly.
The results of the study confirmed that family strengths, growth mindset, EI have influence on SDL ability. In conclusion, to improve SDL ability of students, the author suggests followings.
First, they need to build strong family. Family members should create culture to respect and accept each other. And they should try to spend more time together so that their family bonds become strong.
Second, to encourage growth mindset of students, professors should provide students with specific feedback on not only the outcome of the learning but also the attitudes of students, the strategies students choose. Third, In order to foster EI, students should have a regular habit of managing their emotions. So they should be able to overcome stress and create and maintain proper emotions for learning.
