유아교육기관에 대한 불만과 처리과정에 관한 어머니의 인식

The purpose of the study is to investigate perception on the discontent and solving process of the mothers who send their 3- to 5- year-old children to early childhood education institutions. The research questions are as follows.
1. What is the general perception of the mother regarding discontent and the solving process with early childhood education institutions?
1-1. What is the mother’s general perception of discontent with early childhood education institutions?
1-2. What is the mother’s perception of trivial discontent and the solving process with early childhood education institutions?
2. What is the level of mother’s discontent with early childhood education institutions?
This study was conducted with 230 mothers who are sending their 3- to 5- year-old children to early childhood education institutions in South Korea. A questionnaire manufactured for this research was used to identify mother’s perception and process on discontent with early childhood education institutions. The questionnaire consisted of 9 items asking the mother’s overall perception of the discontent and process on the discontent she had at the early childhood education institutions, 116 items asking the level of discontent she had at the early childhood education institutions, and 5 items asking the mother’s general background. Frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation were calculated for analysis by research questions.
The results of this study were as follows. First, mother’s discontent with early childhood institution was low and mothers were aware of the fact that there could be differences of opinion between mothers. Some mothers perceived other parents’ discontent as excessive. The discontent has increased because fewer children than in the past have increased interest in their children and it said that this social phenomenon is desirable.
On the other hand, although most mothers said they endure the trivial discontent, some mothers expressed the discontent because it is necessary even though it is trivial. Mothers believed that the discontent is related to necessary changes, because their children were uncomfortable and difficult. The discontent was mainly with the teachers and faculty members of the institution.
Most of mothers said it was inappropriate to write online articles, express discontent to administrative agencies, or request CCTV video from early childhood education institutions for trivial discontent. Mothers recognized that the early childhood education institution listened or ignored their opinions depending on whether or not trivial discontent were resolved. In addition, even unresolved discontent could be found to be less dissatisfying if the early childhood education institutions adequately explained the reasons for them.
Second, mothers who send their children to early childhood education institutions were highly dissatisfied in some areas. In particular, they showed higher-than-average discontent in the areas of health, safety and teaching staff, while discontent about infectious disease, sanitation management and fine dust were high among the areas of health & safety. In addition, there were many discontent about teacher’s knowledge, teacher-child interactions, assessment and teacher attitude in the area of teaching staff. On the other hand, the areas of operation management and curriculum showed lower-than-average discontent, while the areas of operation management were high, and the areas of the curriculum were all low.
In this study, while most mothers perceived little discontent and considered over-expression of minor discontent is inadequate, some mothers found that discontent were excessive and tended to over-express. Also, the level of discontent decreased even though the matter was not solved when early childhood institution explained appropriately. Therefore, it suggests that proper parenting education and support should be provided through specific cases to alleviate discontent and excessive expressions of discontent that the mother has with the early childhood education institution. Furthermore, it is meaningful that it can be used as a basic material for building a cooperative relationship between institutions and mothers in the future.
In addition, the mother's discontent with early childhood education institution was high regarding the child's health, safety and faculty, and it was found that she expressed her discontent mainly when she was acting for her child or if her child was inconvenienced or discriminated. Therefore, specific discontent suggest that it is meaningful to reveal which areas mother is seriously perceived to be dissatisfied with early childhood education institution, and that it is necessary to provide support to the mother through parental participation and education about what is the appropriate attitude for the mother toward the child’s growth and development.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 만 3 ~ 5세 자녀를 기관에 보내는 어머니의 유아교육기관에 대한 불만과 처리과정에 관한 전반적인 인식 및 불만 정도를 알아보고자 하였다. 본 연구의 목적을 달성하기 위한 연구문제는 다음과 같다.
1. 유아교육기관에 대한 불만과 처리과정에 관한 전반적인 어머니의 인식은 어떠한가?
1-1. 유아교육기관의 불만에 대한 어머니의 전반적인 인식은 어떠한가?
1-2. 유아교육기관에 대한 사소한 불만과 처리과정에 관한 어머니의 인식은 어떠한가?
2. 유아교육기관에 대한 어머니의 불만 정도는 어떠한가?
본 연구 대상은 한국에서 만 3 ~ 5세 자녀를 유아교육기관에 보내는 어머니 230명이었다. 유아교육기관에 대한 불만과 처리과정에 관한 어머니의 인식을 알아보기 위하여 연구자가 제작한 질문지를 사용하였다. 질문지는 어머니가 유아교육기관에 가지는 불만과 처리과정에 대한 전반적인 인식을 묻는 9문항, 유아교육기관에 가지는 불만 정도를 묻는 116문항과 일반적인 배경을 묻는 5문항으로 구성되었다. 연구문제 별 분석을 위해 빈도와 백분율, 평균과 표준편차를 산출하였다.
연구 문제에 따른 본 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 유아교육기관에 대한 어머니 불만은 적은 편이었고, 불만 정도에 대한 견해 차이를 인정하고 있었다. 일부 어머니는 불만을 심각하게 인식하는 다른 부모가 과하다고 하였다. 또한 과거에 비해 자녀수가 적어져 자녀를 향한 관심이 높아졌기 때문에 불만이 증가했고, 불만이 증가한 사회적 현상이 바람직하다고 하였다.
한편 어머니는 사소한 불만이 있는 경우 대부분 참는다고 하였지만, 일부 어머니는 사소하지만 바뀔 필요가 있고, 내 자녀가 불편하고 힘들기 때문에 표현하며, 주로 교직원에게 불만 표출을 하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 대부분의 어머니는 사소한 불만으로 인터넷, 보도·행정기관에 표출하는 것과 CCTV 영상 열람 요청하는 것은 부적절하다고 하였다. 불만 해결 유무에 대하여 어머니는 기관에서 의견에 귀를 기울였거나 무시하였다고 인식하고 있었고, 해결되지 않은 불만에 대한 이유로 기관이 교육적 의도를 적절하게 설명하면 불만 정도가 낮아진다고 하였다.
둘째, 유아교육기관에 자녀를 보내고 있는 어머니는 일부 영역에 불만이 높았다. 어머니는 건강·안전, 교직원 영역에서 평균보다 높은 불만을 보였고, 건강·안전 영역 중 전염병, 위생관리, 미세먼지에 대해 불만이 높았으며, 교직원 영역 중 교사지식, 교사-유아 상호작용, 교사태도, 평가에 대해 불만이 높았다. 또한 운영관리와 교육과정 영역에서 평균보다 낮은 불만을 보였고, 운영관리 영역 중 교재·교구에 대한 불만이 높았으며, 교육계획 및 실행, 장애통합은 모두 불만이 낮았다.
본 연구에서 대부분의 어머니는 불만도 적고 사소한 불만의 과도한 표출에 대해 부적절하다고 인식하였지만, 일부 어머니는 불만이 과하고 지나치게 표출하는 경향이 있음을 밝혔다. 또한 사소한 불만이 해결되지 않더라도 그 이유를 기관이 적절하게 설명한다면 불만이 낮아지는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 따라서 어머니가 유아교육기관에 가지는 불만과 과도한 불만 표출을 완화할 수 있도록 구체적인 사례를 통한 적절한 부모교육과 지원이 이루어져야함을 시사한다. 더 나아가 향후 어머니의 인식이 기관과 어머니의 상호 협력적인 관계를 구축하기 위한 기초 자료로 활용될 수 있다는 점에 의의가 있다.
또한 유아교육기관에 대한 어머니의 불만은 유아의 건강·안전 및 교직원에 관해 높았고, 주로 내 자녀를 위한 행동이거나 내 자녀가 불편하거나 차별적 대우를 받았을 경우 불만으로 표출하는 것을 알 수 있었다. 따라서 구체적인 불만 내용을 통해 어머니가 유아교육기관에 어떠한 부분에 불만을 심각하게 인식하고 있는지 밝힌데 의의가 있고, 기관에서는 다양한 지원을 통해 어머니의 오해 및 불안과 불신을 줄이려 노력할 필요가 있으며, 어머니가 궁극적으로 자녀의 성장과 발달을 위해 유아교육기관에 가지는 적합한 태도는 무엇인지 부모참여 및 교육을 통해 어머니에게 지원할 필요가 있음을 시사한다.
