The theoretical background behind the birth of Wang Chong's(王充) determinism(命定論) was examined through the relationship between the heaven and humans(天人關係) and the human nature theory(人性論) during the period of the Pre-Qin(先秦時代) and Han dynasty(漢代). As Confucius established humans'(人間) independence(主體性) from absolute ‘Nature(天)’, we can see that Wang Chong also tried to find independence in a Numerological(術數的) aspect. As we can see from his advocacy of determinism arguing that ‘fate(命)’ surely existed because Confucius(孔子) and Mencius(孟子) had acknowledged ‘fate’ or ‘Nature(天)’, he accepted Confucius' and Mencius' approval of destiny(有命論) but denied a Confucian scholars of three kinds of destiny(三命說). Mozi insisted on the ‘rejection of destiny(非命)’ and ‘proving ghosts(明鬼)’ due to the characteristics of a lower-class group, which completely went against Wang Chong's ideology who claimed ‘determinism(定命)’ and ‘rejection of ghosts(非鬼)’. Wang Chong advocated Tian-Tao spontaneous behavior in nature(天道自然無爲) following Zhuangzi's(莊子) idea of spontaneous behavior in nature(自然無爲) and Huainanzi(淮南子), and seems to have been affected by Huang-Lao Taoist(黃老道家) in particular. Xunzi(荀子) argued that one should renovate and use Nature(自然) following Tian-Ren combination(天人相分), however, Xunzi couldn't deny ‘fate’ after all. Wang Chong criticized Dong Zhongshu's(董仲舒) idea who had succeeded in Xunzi's idea of Tian-Ren combination and insisted on Tian-Ren as one(天人合一).
The main purpose for Wang Chong to establish the ideology of Tien-Tao spontaneous behavior in nature was to reject Dong Zhongshu's heaven and humans sympathy theory(天人感應論), and he emphasized that a child was born naturally just with the combination of both of his/her parents' ‘energy(氣)’ because ‘Nature(天)’ was not active(有爲) but non-active(無爲). However, Wang Chong criticized Dong Zhongshu's ‘heaven and humans sympathy theory’ because ‘Nature’ didn't have a mouth, eyes, or hands, so couldn't interact with humans. In this way, Wang Chong who tried to find human independence(主體性) caused absolute heaven's ‘presiding nature(主宰性)’ to be rather acknowledged by cutting off the relation between Nature and humans, which was different from ‘heaven's and human's sympathy’ emphasizing human efforts.
On the other hand, as the background of the birth of Wang Chong's determinism(命定論), his critical mind of Jixuwang(疾虛妄) to investigate illusion thoroughly, for instance, superstition and Chenwei(讖緯), along with his own ‘unfortunate career in government positions’ that prevented him from going to the royal court in spite of his knowledge and good conducts were pointed out. In this way, when sometimes he couldn't solve anything in his reality dealing with a phenomenon he couldn't help, he couldn't find reasonable interpretations, so he discussed the matter of disagreement between ‘nature(性)’ and ‘fate(命)’, and brought everything to ‘fate’. He thought that ‘fate’ was determined early when ‘energy’ was granted, and from that, his idea of determinism(命定思想) was developed. His idea of determinism was about the destiny of life and included all encounters, such as an individual's life and death, longevity and short life, and wealth and poverty. With the development of astronomy and medical science, etc., Wang Chong acquired related knowledge, expanded the view of Tien-Tao nature(天道自然觀), established the system of ‘nature(性)’ and ‘fate(命)’ based on ‘Nature(天)’ and ‘energy(氣)’, and said that when a person was born in a given thick spirit(精氣), he/she could form shouming(壽命) and luming(祿命) to each one's features.
Wang Chong had such broad knowledge and unique ideas that he was even evaluated to extensively cover different groups of ‘Hundred Schools of Thought(諸子百家)’ while not belonging to just one of them, and also exposed diverse contradictions as much as a huge amount of his writing. Among the whole contents of Lun heng, what was the origin of those many contradictions, and what were their limits? In Chapter 「Minglu(命祿)」, he said it was difficult to know the destiny of Nature(天命), yet, in Chapter 「Physiognomy(骨相)」, he said ‘fate’ was easy to know. In Chapter 「Physiognomy」, he mentioned that “not only a saint(聖人) has curious physiognomy(觀相), but also it's easy to know ‘fate’ through physiognomy”, however, in Chapter 「Jiangrui(講瑞)」, he contradicted himself arguing that “a saint has curious physiognomy”, yet also “an evil man's physiognomy can be the same as a saint's." In Chapter 「Zhiqi(治期)」, he mentioned that there was no inevitable relation between whether an emperor was a saint or not and peace and war in the world while in Chapter 「Huiguo(恢國)」, he approved a king's active influences taking the instance of a king's prompt action to deal with disasters and drought.
Also, Wang Chong revealed ‘contradictory thoughts’ in many parts. He had not only an upright personality but also both fidelity and great learning, but he didn't have a smooth relationship with others because of his introverted disposition that prevented him from socializing with friends, which harmed his career in governmental posts and his life. It seems that this personality of his became paranoid when he wrote and that his sometimes simple, broad-minded and hot-tempered personality he had inherited from his ancestors led him to handle a matter on impulse, and it was probably expressed as ‘contradictory thoughts’ in his writings. While writing a huge amount of writings with about 100 subjects for more than 30 years, he seems to have created so many contradictions including those mentioned above that it's hard to reveal all of them. Yet, in Chapter 「Bushi(卜筮)」, a solution to those contradictions was found. It says, “I'd like to ask for heaven, but because it's high, we can't listen to each other. If heaven doesn't have an ear, it has no form. If it's not a form, it's ‘energy(氣)’.” However, in 「Bianxu(變虛)」, it says that “if heaven is body, it has a high ear so can't listen to humans, and if it's ‘energy’ like clouds or smoke, it can't listen to humans,” so he claimed the absolute opposite from what he mentioned in Chapter 「Bushi(卜筮)」 above. In the two sentences, conflicting arguments were made with the same understanding that “because the heaven is high, its ear is far from a human being,” so it can be regarded as intentional, not accidental or paranoid.
Another serious limit was that he only framed a theoretical hypothesis and there were no specific articles as the standard. The typicality of this can be inferred from his argument of ‘physiognomy’. Even though Wang Fu(王府) suggested diverse grounds of ‘physiognomy’, Wang Chong who lived in the same era said that ‘nature(性)’ or ‘fate(命)’ “could be learned from physiognomy(骨體)”, yet couldn't propose their detailed methods or standards but kept listing previous cases in Chapter Physiognomy. These circumstances show that he advocated determinism, but revealed serious shortcomings. Regarding ‘fate’, he hadn't made a systematic hypothesis but developed his logic after forming a hypothesis first that ‘fate’ of rich and poor and high and low was determined when one was born, and it was different from ‘nature’, such as behaviors and talents. When he reached the limit, he made it look complicated by supplementing it with timely fortune(時運). In addition to his not-systematic hypothesis of ‘fate’, timely fortune also seems complicated because it's divided into different types. It looks like a very serious flaw and limitation. Nevertheless, Wang Chong's efforts to understand human life can be said to have great value.
Wang Chong's determinism had a deep impact on the beginning of physiognomy(觀相) or Sizhu Mingli Science(四柱命理). Until the era before Wang Chong, the techniques of predicting fortune through physiognomy had been accumulated, and concerning political events, Chenwei(讖緯) and Tuchen(圖讖) were prevalent. Dong Zhongshu's the same energy transfer theory(同氣感應) in the former Han dynasty(前漢) and Wang Chong's determinism in the latter Han(後漢) can be evaluated to have compiled ancient theories of determinism. In particular, the foundation of Mingli Science seems to have been built based on Wang Chong's natural fatalism(自然命定) as its philosophical basis. Moreover, if a person's fate(命運) is related to ‘energy’ of the nature that was granted at the beginning, Wang Chong's bold and interesting hypothesis that an individual “is given fate for the first time” would become an important opportunity to explore an individual's destiny along with Han dynasty's scholars' thoughts about how ‘energy’ as a material substance runs and how this running ‘energy’ can be described. Furthermore, the regular pattern of spring, summer, fall, and winter in the Chinese feudal agricultural society must have given an important condition to the beginning of Mingli Science. Chinese rational attitude of emphasizing utility and experiences in the reality seems to have made a great contribution to the birth of traditional Mingli Science. At the same time, contrary to this, traditional Mingli Science affected and regulated general norms to recognize and explore human destiny.
Wang Chong established a value system that all people could share by having an intuition on each person's long for wealth and longevity and the realistic aspects of life, such as poverty and early death. In this respect, Wang Chong can be considered as a pioneer who offered an ideological foundation of traditional Mingli Science.
