To build a society where individuals are respected, it is required to solve discrimination and suppression against second-class citizens. We need to overcome the problems of the sexist social structure to reach this ideal. As sexual discrimination shares the same aspect as the discrimination against vulnerable groups, achieving gender equality can provide a clue to solve discrimination against marginalized groups. Based on the critical mind, this research intends to explore the effect and potential of art in improving the perspective of gender equality by fusing gender equality education and art education. Since the revised 2015 art curriculum implies that art can provide the foundation for understanding the society, the subject can help recognize and solve the sexist social structure.
The experimental class used in this research, the project of “We are the Same and Different” was designed based on Art Propel’s domain project for the purpose of breaking gender stereotypes. The results of this project are as follows:
First, the domain project designed focusing on expression activity encouraged grades 1 and 2 students to have high motives.
Second, the perception activity of the domain project helped students explore the sexist social structure in depth.
Third, the art class aiming for creative thinking produced unique and original methods to solve the sexist social problems.
Fourth, the introspection process among other elements of the project was a difficult activity for young children. However, more students participated in the activity as the project went on.
Fifth, the students’ gender stereotypes showed a difference from existing research in terms of the gender stereotypes in doctors, and such standard images were resolved at some point during the class.
Sixth, since grades 1 and 2 students had already been socialized into the gender roles, they followed traditional gender roles when creating artwork based on their preferences.
Seventh, as the project went on, the number of tasks made free from gender stereotypes increased.
Eighth, out of the total 19 students, 11 showed increased perception of gender equality during before-and-after evaluations. Although girls showed higher perception of gender equality compared to boys, educational effect was higher in boys than girls. However, the survey did not reveal statistically significant results.
Ninth, the comparison of the answers of grade 1 and grade 2 students shows that the educational effect is higher in those who have not yet developed gender stereotypes than children who have. Based on the results, the following research conclusion has been drawn:
First, as individual’s gender difference is a socially developed outcome, it is expected that education can help overcome gender stereotypes and develop a positive self-concept.
Second, the gender equality education program designed to break gender stereotypes can have a positive effect on developing students’ gender equality awareness.
Third, the gender equality education for childhood may involve difficulties due to their development level of perception and concentration. In solving such problems, the methodology of the domain project can be effective.
Fourth, the domain project, which revolves around art creation, seems to have a positive effect on developing students’ gender equality awareness.
Fifth, the gender equality education can be more effective when preventing the development of gender stereotypes than breaking them. Therefore,
the gender equality education should be started in early childhood, which is the preoperational stage. Based on the conclusion, the following suggestions are made expecting follow-up research:
First, the gender equality education needs to be provided from early childhood, before students reach grades 1 and 2. In addition, the education is more necessary for boys than girls. Therefore, it is required to perform in-depth research on the necessity and effect of the gender equality education according to students’ gender and age.
Second, to break gender stereotypes, it is necessary to perform art creation activity based on counterexamples of gender stereotypes instead of students’ preferences.
Third, introspection among the three art competencies suggested by Art Propel was a difficult activity for young children. However, as the project went on, the participation rate increased. Therefore, providing help on introspection from the beginning will help increase the effect of the gender equality education designed based on the domain project.
Finally, unlike the results of the observation, art analysis and post interview analysis conducted in the researcher, the results of the before-and-after evaluations did not show statistically significant differences. This is considered because of the age and scale of the research subjects. As such, qualitative research can be a more proper and reliable method than quantitative research based on the research subjects.
