The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between intrinsic motivation and perceived leadership behavior of leader for college students majoring in dance and in accordance with theirachievement goal orientation. To this aim, this study conducted a survey of 397 college students majoring in dance at four different universities located in Seoul and a total of 386 candidates were analyzed. The collected data were used with SPSS Version 23.0 to verify the validity and reliability of the leader behavior / intrinsic motivation / goal orientation questionnaire, followed by frequency analysis, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Scheffe’s multiple range test, correlation analysis, cluster analysis of achievement goal orientation levels, combined with multiple regression analysis. The results of this study were as follows: First, among the general characteristics of university students majoring in dance, gender showed difference in the sub-factors of leadership behavior and intrinsic motivation, and major showed difference in the sub-factors of leadership behavior, intrinsic motivation and achievement goal orientation. Second, TH-EH (Task-High Ego-High) orientation, showed a high significance in their leadership behaviors compared to other goal orientations, showed a singularity in which positively rewarded behavior had a negative impact on the competence of the intrinsic motivation. Third, TH-EL (Task-High Ego-Low) goal orientation group showed significant influence on interest/joy and effort, tension/anxiety, respectively, by training and directive behavior, democratic behavior, and social support behavior. Fourth, the orientation of the TL-EH (Task-Low Ego-High), which had relatively higher intrinsic motivation than the TH-EL (Task-High Ego-Low) goal orientation group, showed that the leadership behaviors were among the four goal orientations that was not affected by the tension/anxiety of intrinsic motivation. In addition, democratic and authoritative behaviors, which are opposite leadership behaviors, had a significant effect on efforts among intrinsic motivations. Fifth, the orientation of TL-EL (Task-Low Ego-Low) to be less significant in leadership activities that can increase intrinsic motivation and it has shown that there is a need to increase the goal orientation itself before the leadership behavior. This study is meaningful in that the two achievement goal orientations are not dichotomous but can coexist within the individual, taking into account the task orientation and the ego orientation. In addition to this, the goal orientation of college students proved to be an important variable that mediates between the leader’s behavior of professors and the intrinsic motivation of college students. This is considered an important factor for learning efficiency for college students in a number of different Majors because the leadership behaviors of professors who are consider goal orientation in the college student’s environment, and this was true with dance, affected their intrinsic motivations.
