『Daebanggwangbul-hwaeomgyeongso』(大方廣佛華嚴經疏)(hereinafter referr ed to as 『Hwaeomgyeongsoju』) considered by this paper, which is a comm entary of Jubon(周本)『Daebanggwangbul-hwaeomgyeong』(大方廣佛華嚴經, Bu ddhāvataṃska-Mahāvaipulya-Sūtra) (hereinafter referred to as 『Jubon Hwa eomgyeong』), which was translated by Śiksānanda(實叉難陀) in Tang, is a Buddhist literature created by Jinshui Jingyuan (晉水 淨源, 1011-1088) in S ong Dynasty, by collecting and editing(會編) 『Daebanggwangbul-hwaeomgye ongso』(hereinafter referred to as 『Hwaeomgyeongso』) published by qinglia ng chengguan(淸凉 澄觀, 738-839) in Tang and the sutra of 『Jubon Hwaeo mgyeong』.
A collection and edition of 『Hwaeomgyeongsoju』 was implemented by Jin su Jeongwon, and it can be found that the goal of it is to resolve difficulti es in perusing sutras and commentaries, as they are separately distribute d, according to recordings. Although it is impossible to clearly specify the period of collection and edition due to lack of any recordings, it can be e stimated that collection and edition might be conducted before Daegakguk sa(大覺國師) Euicheon(義天, 1055-1101) returned to Koryeo. It consisted of a total of 120 volumes. From volume 1 to 5, all parts of Hwaeomhyeonda m (華嚴懸談) among the contents of 『Hwaeomgyeongso』 were written in la rge-sized letters(大字), while the contents of 『Jubon Hwaeomgyeong』 were written in Daeja and those of 『Hwaeomgyeongso』 were written in small-siz ed letters(小字) and double lines(雙行), from volume 6 to 120.
It was introduced to Korea by Daegakguksa Euicheon in the era of Koryeo. Although 『Hwaeomgyeongsoju』 was referred to as many names, since the introduction of it, it formal name is 『Hwaeomgyeongso』 according to Gwonsuje, and it may be desirable to call it 『Hwaeomgyeongsoju』 as an abbreviation, in line with terms used in China and Japan.
『Hwaeomgyeongsoju』 published in Korea includes two editions created in the era of Koryea, five editions in the era of Joseon and two editions in the unknown era. Two editions of Koryea is divided into Euicheon-Jeonraepan and Hageosapan. Euicheon-Jeonraepan are designated as national treasures. Hageosapan is the one possessed as a woodcut, by Haeinsa Temple, in Hapcheon. Among those of Joseon, Cheonggyesapan in the 15th century is only found in 『Dongmunseon』(東文 選), but the existing one has not yet discovered, and Guijinsapan created in the 16th century and Yongboksapan and Songgwangsapan in the 17th century exist. Collection in National Library of Korea is similar to Guijinsapan in its form, so it is presumed as one of editions created in the era of Joseon. Except for them, Art catalogue included by the library in Dongguk University and Muidang Sojoyeoraejwasang excavated from Sudeoksa Temple in Yesan, which are new and do not consist with those above, warrant further studies. Yeonggaksapan, which was previously recognized as a independent edition is determined as later copies of Suncheon Songgwangsapan.
In the 17th century, only a two-year interval in the period of engraving between Yongboksapan and Songgwangsapan is associated with sects of monks. An analysis on imprints of both editions shows that publication participants and engravers belonged to the Cheongheo sect for the former and the Buhyu sect for the latter.
The records regarding the publication of Yongboksapan are included in 『Pyeonyangdangjip』(鞭羊堂集), the anthology of Pyeonyang Eongi(鞭羊 彦機, 1581-1644), and the fact that the Cheongheo sect was associated with the publication of Buddhist literature is supported by the records showing that Heysun(惠淳), the Hwaju(化主) responsible for the publication was closely related with Pyeonyangeongi and Saekreum(賾凜, ?-?) who participated in the revision was a disciple of Muyeomseongjeong(無染 性淨, ?-?) who was also a disciple of Cheongheo Hyujeong(淸虛 休靜, 1520-1604). For Suncheon Songgwangsabon, the record that Byeokam Gakseong(碧巖 覺性, 1575-1660) and Songgye Seonghyeon (松桂 性玄, ?-?), disciples of Buhyu Seonsu(浮休 善修, 1543-1615) led the publication, in「Hwaeomgyeongpan-gaegangi」(華嚴經板開刊記) containing the publication procedure of 『Hwaeomgyeongsoju』, and the fact that Beopheum(法欽) and Damhyeon(淡 玄) appearing in the same record were also shown in the Buddhism record created by the Buhyu sect during the similar period support that the Buhyu sect was associated with the publication of Buddhism literature.
Fron the publication of 『Hwaeomgyeongsoju』 in the 17th century, two facts can be found: first, although the division among sects and the awareness of them were not distinct in the early 17th century, there was the somewhat independent awareness of sects even at that time, given the differences in publication participants between Yongboksapan and Songgwangsapan 『Hwaeomgyeongsoju』 edition and second, from the Buddhism literature published together, it can be estimated that the Buhyu sect was more interested in Huayan-Study, than the Cheongheo sect.
