This study examines the personal characteristics of entrepreneurs who play a key role in the continuous growth and economic development of start-up companies and verified the causal relationship between the effectiveness of start-up support and the management performance of the company through mediation effect.
In order for the personal characteristics of entrepreneurs to be linked to successful management performance, a complex component is needed. In this study, the personal characteristics of entrepreneurs are composed of achievement needs, risk sensitivity, patience, and technological advancement. I would like to present the criteria for judging the mind and attitude of the entrepreneur to the entrepreneurs who are carrying out the start-up and the start-up.
In addition, we will present an improvement plan for the direction of start-up support through analysis of the effectiveness of start-up support.
This study consists of a total of five chapters. Chapter 1 describes the background, purpose, research method and composition of this study. Chapter 2 examines the theoretical background of research, the concept of entrepreneurial characteristics, start-up support, and management performance, and deals with and examines related prior studies. In Chapter 3, we have constructed research models and hypotheses through theoretical backgrounds and defined variables. In Chapter 4, we analyzed reliability and feasibility through empirical analysis and tested the hypothesis. Finally, in Chapter 5, we draw conclusions from this study, suggest implications for the results of the study, and describe the limitations of the research and the future direction of the research.
In order to derive the research sample, 250 questionnaires were surveyed by companies benefiting from the start-up support distributed nationwide for about two months from August 2018. A total of 173 questionnaires were collected and 168 questionnaires were surveyed except for questionnaires that were judged to be inconsistent with companies for more than 7 years.
The following conclusions were drawn on the impact of the personal characteristics of entrepreneurs on management performance and the effect of the start-up support, which is a parameter, on management performance.
First, the personal characteristics of entrepreneurs have a significant impact on management performance. Based on the analysis of four personal characteristics factors used in this study, it was found that all four factors affect the management performance of the start-up company. In addition, the characteristics have been shown to influence the hardness of start-up companies in the order of technological advancement, risk sensitivity, and patience.
Second, the personal characteristics of entrepreneurs were found to have a significant impact on start-up support. In the case of start-up support, it is supported through selection due to the limitations of many founders and supportable resources. In this reality, we can see that the excellent entrepreneurial qualities of the founders are more actively utilizing start-up support.
Third, the hypothesis was adopted that start-up support would have a significant impact on management performance. In this study, we examined the factors of start-up support as funding, education support, mentoring support, and space support, and all four factors have a significant impact on management performance. In addition, the influence on start-up support was in the order of mentoring support, education support, space support, and funding. According to a survey of start-up companies in 2017 by the Korea Institute of Startup & Entrepreneurship Development, 86.4% of the start-up support projects were the highest type of funding, and many prior studies have shown that demand for start-up funding is high, but it has been shown that mentoring and education support are more effective than funding.
As a result of verifying the hypothesis through the above research, it was found that the start-up support was important to the management performance of the start-up company. Recently, interest and support for start-ups have grown rapidly. Despite the quantitative and qualitative growth of the start-up support, the survey of start-up companies by the Korea Institute of Startup & Entrepreneurship Development(2017) showed that 12.5% of the companies that received support for start-ups were found to be small.
The reasons for not receiving support for start-ups were the lack of information on the support project, the difficulty in the selection process, and the difficulty in administrative procedures during the project. Despite the fact that start-up support clearly affects the management performance, which is an indicator of the growth of start-up companies, utilization still needs to be improved. The lack of initial resources is an essential problem for startups. As a way to solve these problems, start-up support is underway. However, it is necessary to solve the problems of various entry barriers that arise in utilizing start-up support.
