“Source community”, which is also called “originating community”, refers to people in the past from whom collections of museums originate, people in the past who owned collections, and their descendants today. Hence, visitors are important source communities of museums.
Visitors as source communities were subsidiary elements of museums during the long history of museums, and western museums considered only indigenous people in the Americas and the Pacific as their source community during the Age of Imperialism. However, post-museum in the 2000’s regarded people called “visitors” as the cultural community of all the objects that museums collected, and post-museum expanded the theoretical concept of source communities to all visitors. Post-museum also considered visitors the most important aspect of the museum, and accepted visitors’ opinions and perspectives. So, efforts were made to keep communication between museums and visitors open.
In the mid 2000’s, mobile devices were widely used and social media developed in the mid 2000’s, thus great changes happened in the museum. With the advancement in technology, visitors who are source community could visit museums anywhere and anytime. Moreover, visitors could be more engaged with the museum. For example, through social media, museums could attract visitors and provide more creative opportunities for visitors to participate. The museums’ efforts to communicate changed the nature of the relationship between museums and the visitors. The visitors can now participate in the museum as “mediation agents”, “prosumers”, “artists”, and “creators.” Along the same lines, curators can now expand their roles to “communicators”, “social engineers”, and “creators.”
Furthermore, collections that museums house are the foundation of knowledge and the initiator of communication between visitors and museums, and therefore, visitors as the source community engaging with the collections is very important. Participation by which visitors demonstrate their collective intelligence and potential through the collection can be called “crowdsourcing” in the field of museums. “Crowdsourcing” in the field of museums is an opportunity to establish source communities’ cultural identities, to relearn the forgotten knowledge and skills, to piece together a scattered historical story, and to convey cultural knowledge across generations. This study investigates crowdsourcing cases in domestic and international museums and classifies the cases into three types of visitor participation based on opinions which the museum receives from the visitors through social media. The types of visitor participation are helping advertisement of museums, providing contents of the exhibition and collection, and co-curating between museums and visitors.
With the widespread use of mobile devices and social media by the public made access the museum is easier for visitors. The development of artificial intelligence(AI) technology based on big data and machine learning is leading to an age of hyper-connection, hyper-intelligence, and hyper-individuality. At the same time, reality and virtual reality(VR) are being blended. These technologies will also provide new opportunities for museums that have a lot of anxiety communicating with visitors and for visitors who are unfamiliar with museums. In this study, the “Cyclical Model of Visitor Participation”(figure 5) was designed based on crowdsourcing cases in the museum. Through the “Cyclical Model of Visitor Participation”, output of crowdsourcing can be utilized more productively and meaningfully in the museum. The technologies that will develop in the process will link crowdsourcing and museum services. Visitors as a source community participate in the museum through social media and demonstrate their collective intelligence, potential, and creativity. This model can combine digital technologies with data accumulated through this participation, and then provide museum services for visitors. The curator as a social engineer designs crowdsourcing to implement the model, and analyzes the data so that the results can be used meaningfully in the museum. In addition, the curator as a communicator communicates constantly with the visitors, and as a creator, performs remediation to reinvigorate the museum. In response to the age of hyper-connection and hyper-individuality, this study named these competencies and roles of a curator as “Participatory Curatorship”(figures 6 and 7).
This study applied this Cyclical Model of Visitor Participation to three projects at Ewha Womans University Museum. In the first project, “Ewha by Ewha: 130 Years of History,” Ewha community members participated in the exhibition as a source community. In the second project, “Ewha Womans University Museum×Wikipedia : Edit-a-thon,” women participated in the event as a source community. In the third project, a participatory exhibition was curated by visitors, and also a recommendation system for curating of exhibitions was built. Particularly, in the last project, visitors took a survey on 100 types of ceramic, such as celadon, white porcelain, and Buncheong Ware of Korea. Through social media, visitors left tags that expressed their impressions, feelings, and interpretations about these pieces of ceramic, and also rated the ceramic on a scale of 1 to 5. In addition, visitors left their demographic and lifestyle information, which were the criteria for the recommendation system. 160 people participated in this project as a source community. This study curated a special exhibition called “You Are Invited as a Curator” that reflected the collected data through crowdsourcing. Using the same data, this study also designed a recommendation system, called “We Will Recommend a Special Exhibition Curated for You” which curated a personal exhibition for each individual.
Through such projects and efforts made by museums, visitors who had been subsidiary elements of museums for a long time became core elements of museums as a source community. The concept of source community reverted back to meaning original owners and their descendants of artifacts collected in museums today. Everyone is the source community of museums. This is significant in that visitors as a source community have legitimate, cultural, and moral stakes in or forms of ownership of museum collections. The study contemplated participation and communication between museums and visitors based on this concept. Moreover, the study suggested a model for visitors as a source community to participate in museums through social media. In addition, this model combines collected output and digital technologies, and then provides museum services for visitors again. This cycle is the Cyclical Model of Visitor Participation based on Participatory Curatorship. Through three projects applied at Ewha Womans University Museum, this study performed remediation for museums and its collections and developed a new type of data curation. Furthermore, this study strives to achieve sincerity through sharing emotion between the source community and the collections, and to recover historical context and place characteristics of the collections. Another aim of this study is to design a new path of cooperation between museums and visitors, and to provide opportunities which can renew the way visitors experience museums.
