유장상법 유년기색 연구 = A Study on Facial Colors Through Years Based on Yujangsangbeop

국문 초록 (Abstract)

사람의 얼굴을 관찰하여 활용하는 것은 동 · 서양의 역사 속에서 그 존재가 분명하고 고대로부터 오늘날까지 존속되어 왔다. 생김새나 기색, 행동 등에서 견해는 있지만 그 맥(脈)은 사람의 모습이 외부로 표현되는 생김새와 기색을 가지고 과거와 현재의 모습을 유추하고 미래의 모습을 예견하는 것을 목적으로 하는 것은 같다. 이처럼 관상법(觀相法)에서 중요시하는 것은 그 사람의 생김새와 기색이다. 특히 기색을 살피는 것은 길흉화복과 건강, 수명 등에 대한 궁금증 해소와 현재와 가까운 미래를 분별하는데 매우 유용한 술법의 하나이다.

관상학의 대표적 고전이라 할 수 있는 『유장상법(柳莊相法)』의 유년운기부위도(流年運氣部位圖)와 유년기색(流年氣色)에서 표현되는 기색에 관한 내용을 살펴보았다. 먼저 상서(相書) 속에 나타난 기색을 분석하기에 앞서, 모체가 되는『유장상법』의 기원과 그 발전 과정을 정리해 보았고, 상법(相法)속에 유년도와 그 속에 담겨져 있는 내용, 활용 방법, 오행(五行)의 생극(生剋) 원리에 대해 거론하였다. 또한 연구 대상인 표현되고 있는 기색에 대한 개념과 이치(理致), 활용성 등을 살펴본바 시간적 차이가 있음에도 표현의 차이가 있을 뿐, 현대에서 활용하는 목적과 유사하다고 할 수 있다.

중요한 것은 유년에서 나타난 기색으로 표현되는 다양한 색과 관련된 내용이 색을 통한 길흉을 분별할 때, 특정 색이 언제나 좋을 수는 없다는 사실이다. 이는 기색을 살필 때, 그 색의 과다(過多) 또는 부족, 오행 상 위치나 한 부위에 여러 기색이 나타나는 경우 등 다양하게 나타나는 현상을 종합적이고 세밀하게 살펴야 한다는 것이다.
상법의 내용을 살펴보면 백성의 주류가 되는 농민, 상공인 등의 모습이나 사례가 극히 제한적이며, 관상의 목적성과 적중되지 않았던 실패한 사례가 없는 것이 아쉽다. 또한 저자인 원충철의 구체적이고 자세한 관찰법이 생략되어 있다. 물론 당시 시대적 사항을 고려할 때 신기하고 소문난 사항만 기록했을 것이고 비결(秘訣)은 글로 남기기란 매우 어려움이 있었을 것이라고 추측이 가능하다. 따라서 아쉬운 점들은 연구를 통하여 후학들에게 올바르게 전하기 위하여 기준이 있어야 하는 필요성을 제시해 보았다. 얼굴 각 부위에서 나타나는 기색이 표출되는 색상, 형태 등을 종합적으로 분석하여 임상에서 적용할 수 있는 기준과 표준화가 있어야 보편성과 합리적 판단을 할 수 있기 때문이다. 첫째, 장소와 조명등의 환경의 기준, 둘째, 기색 구별하는데 현대적 색상의 기준, 셋째, 대상자의 상태의 기준, 넷째, 관찰자가 심리적으로 안정된 자세 기준이 정해져 있다면 이것을 기준에 따라 임상에서 적용하여, 생산된 자료의 표준화와 축적된 데이터, 정보공유, 교육시스템 등 연결성이 필요하다. 또한 동양은 개체의 상을 볼 때 부분적으로 보는 방식뿐만 아니라 직관적․종합적으로 관찰하는 것을 중요시 여겼다. 반면 서양에서는 얼굴에 대한 세세한 분석적 태도로 과학적 데이터를 가지고 합리적 접근방법을 잘 활용하였으면 한다.

『유장상법』의 유년에 대한 기색을 살피고 그 속에 나타난 표현된 내용에 관하여 연구하면서 관상법에서 유년부분을 다양하게 가치를 활용하더라도 건강한 방향으로 전해져야 한다는 메시지(message)를 생각할 수 있는 계기가 되었고, 또 한편으로 관상학적으로 온전한 생김새와 기색을 지닌 외형(外形)은 불가능하다. 따라서 타고난 외형의 부족함을 보완하고 좋은 기색을 유지하기 위해서는 무엇보다 가장 중요한 것은 사람은 건강한 신체에서 나오는 건강한 정신은 그 외형과 기색을 변화시키는 매우 중요한 기본이라는 것을 느꼈다. 결국 이 연구를 통하여 희망이 필요하신 분들에게 도움이 되는 학문이 될 수 있고, 좋은 점들을 계속 발전시키고 전하기 위해서는 과학적이고 합리적인 방법들이 연구되고 발전되어야, 학문으로서 인정받고 사회적 부정적 분위기를 변화시킬 수 있다. 라는 확신이 이번 연구에서 얻어진 결과이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In the history of both East and West, observing people’s faces and utilizing them has apparently existed from ancient times to today. Although there are differences in looks, facial colors and behavior, the two cultures have the common goal of guessing his/her past and present and predicting the future through his/her physical looks and facial colors. As such, what is considered important in physiognomy is a person’s look and facial color. Observing facial colors, in particular, is a very useful technique for answering questions about good or bad luck and fortune, health, life span and reading the present and near future.

This research explored facial colors shown in Image of Fortunes According to Facial Parts and Facial Colors Through Years from a typical classic in physiognomy, 『Yujangsangbeop』. Before analyzing facial colors in physiognomy books, the origin and development process of their parent book, 『Yujangsangbeop』, were organized, and Image of Fortunes According to Facial Parts in sangbeop and the included content, utilization methods, and principle of generating and controlling cycles of five elements were discussed. Moreover, the concept, reason and utilization of the expressed facial colors, which are the target of this research, were revealed to be similar to today’s purpose of use, although there were differences in expression despite the different times.

What is important is the fact that specific colors cannot always be good when determining good or bad luck through various colors expressed with facial colors shown through years. This means that when observing facial colors, it is necessary to comprehensively and precisely observe different cases such as excessive or lack of color, location based on the five elements, or various facial colors in a single part.

When it comes to sangbeop, the looks or cases of the mainstream of people such as farmers and merchants are very limited, and it could have been better if it included cases with failed purpose and assumption of physiognomy. Moreover, it does not show the specific and detailed observation method of the author Zhongche Yuan. Considering the time when the book was written, it is assumed that only interesting and gossiped details would have been recorded, and it would have been very difficult to leave secrets in writing. Accordingly, this research suggested the necessity of having criteria to pass on the right facts to future students through research. This is because universality and rational decisions can be achieved with the criteria and standardization that can be clinically applied by comprehensively analyzing the colors and shapes of each part of the face where the facial color is observed. If the following criteria are established, these need to be clinically applied for the standardization of the produced data, data accumulation, sharing of information, and accomplishment of connection with the education system: first, criteria for environment including place and lighting; second, criteria for modern colors required to classify facial colors; third, criteria for the condition of an observed person; and fourth, criteria for the observer’s psychologically stable positions. In addition, the East has put stress on the way of observing the face of an object partially as well as intuitively and comprehensively. Meanwhile, it is expected in the West to have meticulous and analytic attitudes for the face and utilize a rational approach with scientific data.

This research on facial colors through years in 『Yujangsangbeop』 and content described in the book delivered the message that utilization of various values on the part of through years in physiognomy needs to be in a healthy way, and it is impossible to have appearance with physiognomically complete looks and facial colors. Therefore, what is the most important to supplement a natural appearance and keep good facial colors is to remember “a sound mind is in a sound body.” This is the essential factor to change appearance and facial colors. This research is expected to be helpful for those who are finding hope, and I am confident that it is required to study and develop scientific and rational methods to continuously advance and pass on good aspects so as to be recognized as an academic field and turn around the negative social perception.
