This study aims to find some factors that raise students’ English
academic achievement. For this purpose, Parental Learning Involvement
and Grit were chosen as the two variables for the study criteria. The
participants of the study were 570 high school students in Busan and
they answered a survey that prompted them to rate the answers in range
of 1-5. With the collected data, the level and the structural
relationship of the two variables and English academic achievement were
analyzed using t-test, correlations analysis, and structural equation
model analysis. The results of the study are as follows.
First, Parental Learning Involvement and English academic achievement
showed a positive correlation.
Second, Grit affected English academic achievement positively.
Third, it was shown that Parental Learning Involvement had a direct
effect on Grit. Among them, Parental academic pressure showed a negative
correlation and Parental provisions of academic information showed a
positive correlation with Grit.
Fourth, in regard to the mediating effect of Grit between Parental
Learning Involvement and English academic achievement, it was revealed
that Parental Learning Involvement had an indirect effect on English
academic achievement through Grit. More specifically, Grit had a
negative indirect mediation effect between Parental academic pressure
and English academic achievement, and had a positive indirect
mediation effect between Parental provisions of academic information
and English academic achievement.
Finally, the study confirmed that there was a significant difference
between a group of male and female in the path from Parental
provisions of academic information to Grit. The path coefficient of
Parental provisions of academic information to Grit was significantly
higher in the group of male than that of female.
This study has a practical significance in that it not only offers
proper ways of Parental Learning Involvement for raising high school
students’ English academic achievement through verification of
structural causality among Parental Learning Involvement, Grit, and
English academic achievement, but also provides a need for development
of individual’s internal characteristics such as Grit.
Based on the results of this study, the following suggestions are
made for students’ accomplishment of ultimate English academic
achievement: first, parents should provide an efficient information
related to their children’s English studies, and refrain from
enforcing academic pressure in a long-term perspective. Second, parents
and teachers need to control students’ Grit and look for ways to raise
their level of Grit. Lastly, parents must get involved in their
children’s English studies in proper ways considering the gender
differences.
