Bernard Leach의 생애와 작품세계 = (A) STUDY ON CERAMIC WORKS OF BERNARD LEACH

국문 초록 (Abstract)

「陶器는 모든 藝術 중에서 가장 單純한 동시에 가장 難解하다. 그것은 가장 基本的이기 때문에 가장 單純하며, 가장 抽象的이기 때문에 가장 難解한 것이다. 역사적으로 말하면 그것은 藝術 중의 最初의 것이다.」
라는 美術批評家 Herbert Read의 진술대로 陶磁藝術은 人類 역사상 가장 긴 傳統을 가졌으나 初期에는 藝術의 한 分野이기 보다는 生活의 道具로서 제작되어 왔던 것이 사실이다.
藝術家들이 陶磁器를 藝術의 한 分野로 간주하게 된 것은 近代에 이르러 東·西洋에서 陶磁槪念이 급격히 발달을 하면서 부터이다.
本 論文은 日本에서 陶磁授業을 마친 후 極東의 발달된 陶磁文化를, 산업혁명으로 쇠퇴일로에 있던 유럽의 手工藝界에 傳達하여, 유럽의 陶藝를 復興시키는 역할을 한 英國의 陶藝家 Bernard Leach의 作品을 분석함으로써 그의 作品에 나타난 特性과 그의 思想을 硏究하였다.
이를 위해 그의 생애와 시대적 배경을 살피고, 구체적으로 Leach의 도자기를 作品 技法上으로 分類하여 分析하였다.
이러한 과정 속에서 얻어진 硏究 結論은 다음과 같다.
첫째, 그의 作品이 東洋陶藝, 특히 韓國의 陶磁器에서 많은 영향을 받았다는 사실을 알게 되었으며,
둘째, Leach는 東洋陶磁器, 즉 中國, 韓國, 日本의 발달된 陶藝와 그 가치를 西洋의 陶藝家들에게 일깨워 줌으로써 西洋의 陶磁器가 급격히 발달하게된 계기를 마련해 주었으며,
셋째, 그의 생애는 다만 陶藝家로서 그친 것이 아니라 版畵裵, 敎育家, 工藝家, 思想家, 著述家로서 92세의 긴 생애를 通해 자신의 제작활동뿐 아니라 工藝, 더 나아가서 藝術의 復興과 대중의 美的 취향의 向上을 도모하였다는 사실을 깨닫게 되었다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

"Pottery is at once the simple st and the most difficult of all arts. It is simplest because it is the most elemental: it is the most difficult because it is the most abstract. Historically, it is among the first of the arts."
As the above statement by Herbert Read, an art critic, pottery has the oldest tradition in human history. However they produced pottery as a household utensil in its early stage rather than as a field of art. It war not until the modern times when the concept of pottery began to develop both in the West and the East the artists gradually thought of it as a realm of arts.
In this thesis, I have studied the ceramic works of Bernard Leach, an English ceramic artist who, after completion of his study of pottery in Japan, played an important role in rehabilitating the ceramic art in Europe by transmitting the developed ceramic culture in the Far East to the world of handicraft in Europe where it was declining day by fay due to the industrial revolution, and researched the characteristics and his thoughts expressed in his works by means of analysis.
For this purpose, his life and periodic backgrounds were reviewed, and Leach's ceramics classified and analyzed by decoration technics of pottery. The results of study obtained through such processes are as follows :
First, it has been found out that his works have been greatly affected by the Oriental ceramic art, especially the Korean pottery.
Second, he provided a momentum for rapid development of the Western by awakening the ceramic artists in Europe as to the advanced pottery, and its value, of the Oriental Pottery, that is, the ceramics in China, Korea, and Japan.
Third, I have realized the fact that, through his long life of 92 years not only as a ceramic artist but also as a etcher, educator, craftsman, thinker, and writer, he not only engaged in production activities, but also attempted at the rehabilitation of arts and enhancement of the aesthetic propensity of the public.
