On the thesis, I tried to classify the recording chronologically for the 3 Story Buddhist Stone Stupa of Seoknamsa Temple, in EonYang.
In the 2nd chapter, I've described the history and the structural feature about the Buddhist Stone Stupa. There are based on "The Historical Research of Seoknamsa Temple(石南寺事蹟)" written by Cheongweol Chuyeon(晴月秋演, on 1716(the 42th year of King Sukjong period of Joseon Dynasty) and a few articles left by the monks or nuns, and Ammakssae or Tablets carved with Dhamma, and a few records about buddhist printings and old maps preserved until now in Seoknamsa Temple. In addition, I've also tried to clarify a basis for existence of a few hermitages such as Yeondeungam Temple, Naewonam Temple, and Bakwoondae and the Judgment Hall which contains Ksitigarbha(Myongbujon), which are presented only record in there.
In 1972, the Stupa was designated as Tangible Cultural Heritage(No.22, belonged to Gyeonsangnamdo Province), and designated again by Ulsan City as the No.5 on Oct.9, 1997. Now the 3 Story Buddhist Stone Stupa of Seoknamsa Temple is standing on a two-tiered pedestal base with 5m high and 2.3m width as a square-shaped. On the whole, it is showed proper height and well-balanced shape as a stupa. There is emphasized on the structural features of the Stupa how to place stones. There are put 4 flat stones on the lower layer and 2 flat stones on the higher layer. Specifically, all the foundation stone, myeonseok and flat stone of stylobate are constructed by special stones. The way how to construct such a special style was used to build stone stupas since the end of 9th centuries.
In the 3rd chapter, I've tried to find a specific style of the Stupa of Seoknamsa Temple. First and foremost, features of the Stupa was carved on the stylobate with Ansang patterns. Instead of the style of Wooju and Taengju which are common for the other pagodas, each sides of myeonseok of the lower stylobate has carved 4 Ansang patterns. Such a special feature was characterized on the structures after the end of 9th centuries. In addition the special feature was same style with the 3 Story Buddhist Stone Stupa of Chukseosa Temple(867A.D.), so it was provided the very important notes for me to clarify data on the Pagoda historically. And there are 2 tiered base stone with wide Hogak Style on the upper side of the flat stones for the lower stylobate. Such a Hogak Style was used to mold on the edge of stone stupa for the Silla Period in order to apply softness for the stone material. There were ordinary used to put 2 tiered base stone for the lower layer, for the most of 3 story buddhist stone stupas, but specially it was put 4 tiered based stone for the Stupa of Seoknamsa Temple. The special style was changed on the base stone for the lower layer since the end of 9th centuries. The upper surface of roof stone for the 3 Story Buddhist Stone Stupa of Seoknamsa Temple was constructed 3 tierd base stone with Gakhogak Style, and 4 tiered base stone for the lower surface. And flats for raindrops and all the base stones are constructed as a whole body. The flats for raindrops of the roof stone is inclined moderately, Choonyeo is stretched to Jeongak and then lifted up slightly. 4 tiered base stone for the lower surface of the roof stone are characterized between the end of 9th centuries and the beginning of 10th centuries. The flats for raindrops of the roof stone, Choonyeo and Jeongak are characterized specifically since the 3 Story Buddhist Stone Pagoda of Bulguksa Temple was built in the middle of 8th centuries.
In the 4 chapter, I classified periodically the structural feature what I found in the 2nd and 3rd chapters, and tried to clarified the history about the construction. Consequentially, I found the 3 Story Buddhist Stone Stupa of Seoknamsa Temple was built as superb buddhist art between the end of 9th centuries and the beginning of 10th centuries.
