옌거링의 소설 『金陵十三釵』와 영화 『진링의 13소녀』의 비교분석 = A comparison of Yan Geling's novel “13Flowers of Nanjing” and Zhang Yimou's movie “The Flowers of War”

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구의 목적은 일본의 비인간적인 행위로 인하여 무수한 생명이 희생된 난징대학살을 배경으로 한 옌거링의 소설 『金陵十三釵』와 이를 각색한 장이머우 감독의 영화 『진링의 13소녀』를 비교․분석하는 데 있다. 이를 위하여 먼저 옌거링의 생애와 작품세계를 살펴보고 소설과 영화의 특징을 각각 분석하였으며, 등장인물과 줄거리, 서사기법, 서술시점의 측면에서 소설과 영화를 비교․분석했다.
소설 『金陵十三釵』는 난징대학살 시기의 중국을 공간적 배경으로 한다. 진링여자문리대학의 교무주임 미니 보트린의 일기에 나오는 일본군의 여대생 상납 요구 사건이 창작 배경이 되었으며, 전체적인 사건의 전개는 친화이허의 기녀와 성당의 여학생들을 중심으로 이야기가 진행된다. 기녀와 여학생을 성당이라는 신성한 장소에 등장시켜 갈등이 극대화되는데, 이는 여성과 하층민을 주로 묘사하는 옌거링의 작가적 특성이 공통적으로 드러나는 부분이다.
장이머우 감독의 영화 『진링의 13소녀』는 소설 『金陵十三釵』를 각색하여 영화화한 작품으로 감독 특유의 연출과 표현방식이 두드러지게 드러난 작품이다. 영화는 또한 각색 과정에서 흥행을 목표로 한 상업적 성격을 갖고 있으며, 줄거리는 원작에서 상당히 압축되었다는 특징이 있다.
소설과 영화는 등장인물과 줄거리, 서사기법, 서술시점의 측면에서 차이점이 있다. 등장인물의 측면에서는 영화의 흥행을 위하여 할리우드 배우를 캐스팅했으며, 이를 중심으로 이야기가 개편되면서 주요인물의 집중화가 이루어지고 동시에 다른 인물의 역할은 통합되거나 축소․삭제되었다. 줄거리의 측면에서 보면 소설은 결말이 먼저 등장하는 이야기 구성을 채택하고 있으나 영화에서는 시간의 흐름에 따라 스토리가 전개된다는 차이점이 있다. 서사기법에 있어서는 소설이 이원대립을 바탕으로 다양한 갈등구조를 묘사했다면, 영화에서는 일부 장면에 집중하였다는 차이점이 있다. 서술시점에 있어서는 소설이 수쥐안의 조카인 제삼자가 이야기를 들려주는 형태로 진행되지만 영화는 내레이션을 도입하지 않고 일반적인 영화의 시점인 삼인칭 형태를 채택하면서 일인칭의 효과를 주는 연출 기법을 활용했다.
종합적으로 보면 등장인물의 측면에서 영화는 흥행을 목적으로 각색이 이루어졌으며, 줄거리와 서사기법․서술시점의 측면에서 영화의 특성에 맞게 단순화․명료화되었으며 중요한 몇몇 소수의 사건에 집중하는 방식으로 개편되었다. 이는 원작의 작품성과 메시지를 완전히 전달하지는 못하지만 영화라는 매체의 특성을 적절히 반영한 것이며, 동시에 상업화에서도 성공을 거두었다는 점에서 원작소설과 영화 모두 각자의 작품성과 예술적 가치를 갖고 있는 것으로 나타났다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this study is to compare Geling Yan's novel, 13 Flowers of Nanjing, to Zhang Yimou's dramatized movie, The Flowers of War. For this purpose, research about Geling Yan's life and all her works was conducted. Then, the features of the novel and movie were studied. Finally, a comparative study of the novel and movie was made with respect to the characters, storyline, narrative structure, and point of narration.
The novel is set in Nanjing, China, during the 1930's and is about the Nanjing Massacre. Geling Yan was inspired by an account in a diary written by Minnie Vautrin, an American missionary who ran an all-girl college in Nanjing. Japanese soldiers demanded that the college’s students serve as sex slaves. The situation that living college students and prostitutes in church make conflict getting worse. The author focuses on the women and lower class people, which are characters often found in Geling’s other works.
The Flowers of War is Zhang Yimou's movie adaptation of Yan’s novel. As a director, Zhang had his own special techniques, which can be seen in this movie. The movie changed some features of the original novel. Since the movie was intended to become a box office hit, the characters were changed and the plot was simplified.
Comparing the movie to the novel, we first see that the characters have been changed. A famous Hollywood actor was cast into the lead role to help the movie become a hit in the movie market. The result of this change meant that the plot had to be adapted to focus on the main actor while the roles of the other characters were integrated, reduced, or even, removed. Next, the storyline was changed. The movie proceeds chronologically, although the novel has the movie’s final scene in an earlier part. The narrative structure was also altered. In the novel, there are many conflicts among the characters but the movie focused only on a few of the characters.
Finally, the narrative point of view was modified. The novel is narrated by the nephew of Suchen, one of the novel’s characters. The movie takes a third-person point of view, although there are a few scenes narrated in the first person.
In conclusion, the characters of the novel were adapted for the movie with the purpose of making a box office hit. The storyline, as well as narrative structure and point of view, was adapted and simplified. The movie does not have as much of a literary value or message as does the novel, but the movie adapted as media special properly and made hit. So, while the novel has literary value, the movie does have cinematic quality.
