Purpose: The purposes of this study were first to develop smartphone based serious educational game for disaster casualty triage and then test its effect on knowledge of disaster casualty triage, average time spent to triage, correct answer rate of triage, rubric score, and expectation of learning transfer on disaster casualty triage in nursing students. Methods: The disaster casualty triage serious educational game was developed by the ADDIE model (analysis, design, development, implementation, evaluation) along with input from experts, nursing students and an extensive literature review. The study was carried out with a equivalent control group pre-post test design. The subjects of the study were 98 nursing students enrolled at a college located in D city. The subjects were divided into an experimental group (n = 50) who used disaster casualty triage serious educational game and a control group (n = 48) who used in the traditional education material on disaster casualty triage. Date were collected from 28 September to 30, 2017. Collected data were analyzed using IBM SPSS 21.0 program by calculating frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, Chi-square test, independent t-test. Results: The experimental group had significantly higher scores in knowledge on disaster casualty triage (t=-2.45, p=.016), correct answer rate of triage (t=-3.39, p<.001), rubric score (t=-2.11, p=.037), and expectation of learning transfer (t=-2.98, p=.004) than those of the control group. Conclusion: Serious educational game for disaster casualty triage was effective to enhance knowledge of disaster casualty triage and expectation of learning transfer of disaster casualty triage in nursing students. Therefore, more diverse serious game should be developed to incorporate diverse educational needs of nursing students as well as nurses as a way to enhance professional nursing status which requires diverse skills and in-depth knowledge.
