Since the 2000s, the most active policy in urban regeneration is regenerate idle industrial facilities into cultural space. Culture-led regeneration, not only improves the physical environment but also stimulates cultural curiosity, and establishes urban identity. Especially, recent urban regeneration policy considered sense of place as an important factor while establishing urban regeneration policy because it emphasizes sustainability of place through interaction of place and human. The urban regeneration cultural space is the idle industrial facility where the preservation value is high because it has the historical memory of the past industrial age, value for practical use is high because it provides visitors with a unique tourism experience. For this reason, studies on urban regeneration culture space have been carried out in various disciplines, but lacks empirical studies considering actual place visitors. Analyzing the place characteristics of visitors to the urban regeneration cultural space can help to establish the urban marketing strategy in the future, and can see how the space that has declined through urban regeneration has become a different place.
Therefore, this study analyzes the place characteristics of visitors to the urban regeneration culture space and extracts the place-based positioning maps according to the visiting behavior characteristics to enhance understanding of the place culture of the urban regeneration culture space. 20 adjectives were extracted from previous research to measure view of visitors to the Mullae Art Village. Among 400 distributed questionnaires 382 complete responses were used for further analysis. Frequency analysis, descriptive statistics analysis, exploratory factor analysis and reliability analysis, along with positioning map was derived using multi-dimensional scale analysis(PROXSCAL). The results of this study are as follows.
First, as a result of analyzing the locality of all respondents, The Sense of place of the Mullae Art Village shows that, the newly formed place and the history of the past industrial facilities coexist. Second, according to the purpose of visit, ‘family/friends/friendship acquaintance’ was perceived as ‘attractive’, ‘unique’, ‘memorable’. ‘Relaxation and leisure activities’ were found to be similar to ‘family/friends/friendship acquaintance’, but the intensity was somewhat weak. ‘Cultural-artistic attraction’ is recognized as ‘important’, ‘diverse’, ‘interesting’, and ‘historical’. On the other hand, ‘Other’ does not recognize special place. Third, according to major visitor activities, ‘Café/restaurant/pub’ and ‘walking and sightseeing’ groups were perceived as a ‘attractive’, ‘unique’, and ‘individualistic’. The ‘photography’group was perceived as ‘meaningful’, ‘memorable’, and ‘interesting’, and ‘wall painting/performance/exhibition’ was perceived as ‘artistic’ place. On the other hand, the ‘other’ group was perceived as ‘diverse’, ‘historical’ place. Fourth, according to the number of visits, ‘1 time’ and ‘2 times’ show that Mullae Art Village is ‘artistic’, ‘creative’, ‘memorable’, ‘unique’ as a place. ‘Three-four times’ has been perceived as a ‘historical’ and ‘diverse’ place. However, ‘more than 5 times’, did not recognize a special place.
This study has the following academic and practical implications. First, empirical analysis on urban regeneration culture space was carried on the basis of existing case study and theoretical study. Second, we analyzed the sense of place for actual visitors, not expert judgment. Third, it can be used as a useful resource for creating exhibitions, programs, events, and performance plans based on positioning maps by visiting behavior. Fourth, it can be used as a baseline data for the planning of urban recreation culture space in the future.
Despite these implications, this study has some limitations. Representatively, It is difficult to generalize it the urban regeneration cultural space because it deals with Mullae Art Village. Mullae Arts Village is a cultural space composition initial stage in urban regeneration, it is possible that the location may be formed differently depending on the types of idle industrial facilities. It is expected that future studies will consider above mentioned limitations while analyzing urban regeneration culture space.
