In on-demand economy, new behavior changes have emerged, in which customers are actively involved in product production and planning. As a result, self-customization services are beginning mainly by leading manufacturing companies. The purpose of this study is to identify the factors affecting the adoption of self-customization services focusing on these changes.
This study constructs a model based on the value-based acceptance model, focusing on the case of Audi automobile. This study analyzed how perceived benefits and perceived costs of self-customization service affect perceived value and intention to use.
As a method of analysis, PLS structural equation model was used. A total of 359 copies were collected from the survey for 3 months from March to May 2017.
As a result, perceived fit, self-efficacy, ability to express preference, and product involvement were adopted as the factors affecting perceived benefits among customers' desire variables. Perceived enjoyment and perceived usefulness both influenced on perceived value, and in perceived costs, three factors such as technicality, perceived fee, and anxiety influenced on perceived value. Perceived value has an effect on intention to use.
In group comparison test for each age group, the results show that there were differences between Z-generation (10-20s) and over 40s in 5 hypothesis. Especially, a conflicting perception exists between two age groups in the path that perceived fee affecting perceived value.
Other control variables, such as self-customization service experience and income, also have significant differences in separate groups. Above all, in group comparison for each self-customization service experience group(Y/N), there are significant results in various path so it is expected to give insight for strategy related with establishing self-customization Service.
Furthermore, moderating effect analysis conducted and the result shows that moderate variables, variety seeking and social innovativeness, has significant effect on the relationship between perceived benefits(or perceived costs) and perceived value.
Therefore, it is expected that it is desirable to develop self-customization service for customers with high variety seeking and social innovativeness whose value is expanded by possessing new products.
Especially, it seems that a strategic approach to perceived enjoyment, perceived usefulness, and perceived fee, which are the variables that have the greatest effect on perceived value, is needed. Because product involvement has had a significant impact on all three factors, it is likely that the marketing activities and UX design that will make consumers feel happy and comfortable when using the self-customization service and its products are necessary. Most of all, the implementation of flexible self-customization services that can embody customer preferences at the service and environment levels can be the most important.
At personal ability level, self-efficacy is also an important influencing factor, so it is expected that measures should be taken to improve customer's clear perception of preference and confidence in using Self-Customization service.
