In our country, modernism was bolstered by peculiar powers. In 1876, with the Ganghwa Treaty, Japan started to acquaint us with western artifacts. The modern era from those days were engraved in our memories, as part of the colonial period due to the particular historical situation, ergo undervaluing and ostracizing Modernism itself. The process of architectural modernization was dictated by the political and economical acumen. A nation that had its sovereignty dispossessed, had no right whatsoever to decide, leaving the construction of buildings under the sole arbitration of the Japanese. The post Korean war left us with debris of modern buildings, and whatever was remaining, were only traces of the Japanese Imperialism. It was the remembrance of the ignominious past. The modern buildings got lost and forgotten, due to the focus on rebuilding the nation and devloping its industrial technologies. The lack of awareness towards the important values of modern architecture within the scope of history, culture and architecture, led to its crippled identity. Today, modern architecture is not only defined based on its functions, usefulness and formative features. Modern architecture is an archive that contains its past social situation, its history and culture, without being dependent on time and space. In an effort to admit the value of modern architecture, modern architecture museum have been established, whereas founding a system for its preservation and good use. Furthermore to illustrate, it was not only the aim at preserving its formative functionality and erecting a building, yet focused on utilizing the concept of museums, within the culture. Nowadays, museums have a metamorphic identity, where new concepts can be easily adapted, such as the eco-museums. The latter type, puts its efforts into not only preservation of history, culture and ecology, but incessant researching and exhibiting of this cultural heritage. In other words, this in hand will enable museums to explore history, culture and lifestyle through its modern architecture. While engaged in the latter, the focus on lightnings of buildings, or even utilizing other outlets to depict its value in the area. The purpose of the present research is to study and analyze the present position of the museums utilizing modern architecture possessing, great symbolic values in history, and architecture, conjointly presenting actual eco-museums' case studies, to propose a way to revitalize the management of museums within the scope of modern buildings. The subjects for this study-survey were, (1) a designated and registered cultural heritage museum that posses modern architecture and (2) an eco-museum. In furtherance of grasping the current status of museums, we have identified, 32 museums in accordance to the museums and art museums promotion law. We also had exchanged views applying preceding research on what methodologies are the museums being administered by, through making reference to previous studies, official museum websites, published books, academic journals, academic research materials and dissertations. To recapitulate, the museums with registered cultural properties were mainly concentrated in the Seoul area, where most of them showed a specific attribution in terms of business functionality. The most common content found at these museums were historical records of the building or specific historical contents. Similarly, for the exhibition and educational content programs, we discovered they were mostly based on what was mentioned above, with the inclusion of an effort to correlate the museum thematic with modern architecture. Furthermore, we analyzed in depth the museums that have a concept of an eco-museum in operation such as, Donaemoon Village Museum, Samrae Culture and arts village, Incheon art Platform, to prove somewhat how the collective regional identity is established, not only through the architectural piece alone but with the adoption of new values, emanating from history, culture and ecology. In the present research, we intended to revitalize the administration method of museums, from an eco-museum standpoint. First of all, with the incorporation of an approach to introduce history and cultural values of a specific region using modern building and museums and lead to the development of the specific community. Second, it can enable the establishment of a creative and professional area by building bridges of communication between the locals and expert personnel of museums by utilizing modern architecture. Third, by ameliorating systems to specific regional utilization of museums with modern architecture, can add a much more positive outlook in museum administration. Fourth, Systematizing the use and preservation of modern architecture, by coupling it with national policies, withal, the modern museum architectures can become a symbolic brand to represent the history and culture of a specific region leading to further regional development as well as many other significant values. With the study on museums utilizing modern architecture and the ones based on the eco museums standpoint, have shown us how they have been neglected and lost in the quest of discovering their own identity, and how all these modern buildings or those that are used by museums, are being wasted. Logically, with the implementation of a more active use of these architectural pieces, offering us much more valuable contents, whereas enriching the local ecosystem, we can only hope for the revitalization of the local community as well as its ecosystem.
