The paper offered an adequate philosophical view through Oriental and Western concepts for 'fate'. From the ancient we has been afraid of a unknown world. The same is true of our own fate. That is, as a unenlightened man who never knows an inch of him or her, he or she sets an ultimate existence, entrusts he existence with his or her own fate and predicts the future through scientific investigation in order to overcome fear for the future. Human history for development has showed a dramatic change as it can be called history of fate.
From personal relations including individual character, constitution, talent, career or family relationship to ups and downs of life, 'fatalism' means a discussion for fate as an entity to lead a metaphysical frame which has influence on the entire life. Although the power of fate comes to a man with a variety of forms, human understanding of the power has a common frame, which results in fatalism. This can be seen on people in any era. From the past fate has been an object for faith or worship or a subject for theology or philosophy. Diverse spells such as oracle, astrology and divination has developed to predict the power or rule and they have been a theme of philosophy from the past. Deliberation for fate can be seen in many classics about the area of Oriental philosophy. It proves that Oriental people have thought fate as a precious value. Yet it is very difficult to define fate with one word although a long history of study gave birth to many results.
Understanding of fate in the ancient was divided into two aspects by the awareness that a man know or do nothing. First, a God with personality controls every phenomenon of the universe and his intention reaches a man through fate. Second, as basic consciousness and determination for human independence has been expressed and the transfer of concept from god to human began, fate has been understood by a moral aspect.
There is a man who attempts to commit a suicide. Is he a philosophical man? No one of us can readily answer the question. A man who has independence and activity may think control his own fate for himself. Yet a common sense for fate is not absolute regardless of the Orient and the West. In other words, advent of determinism and nihilism in the modern West proved that fatalism is not absolute any more. Also, in the Orient, fatalisms appearing in every idea of Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism have no consistency from each other. Fatalisms in a large scale of a frame has similar contents from each other, but in details there is quite a difference from each other. In the West monotheism was turned into panentheism through process theology, while in the Orient polytheism showed a variety of gods as Hinduism, Taoism and shamanism. In the case of Taoism there are countless gods including Laotzu, Yuanshi Tianzun and the King of Heaven to be discussed. However morality, an ultimate reason, can be found at the peak.
The modern society is greeting the 4th industrial era when the human role moves to the machine one. Yet we have a lack of human beings. We are living in an era when we must understand machines despite a lack of understanding human beings. Still, asking full understanding of machines, no scientist says "yes" with confidence. There is no need for science if understanding of machines are complete. As the world is incomplete for science, scientists devote themselves to continuous study and research through supportive efforts. The same is true of understanding of fate. It is reasonable to complement the understanding of fate through diverse learnings and experiences as we do not know all about fate.
The paper tried to focus on the concept of ‘fate’. I was so aware of the need of figure out how much people understand 'fate' and what a value for the future is. The question is expected to be a studying task later.
