The purpose of this study is to examine the religious aspects and functions of Jesado
(祭祀圖, ancestral shrine paintings) produced during the late Joseon period(1392-1910). Such paintings, which were created for the ancestral rites in Confucian
style, were called Gammoyeojaedo (感慕如在圖, i.e. “paintings for ancestral
veneration”). There are, however, some elements in the painting which cannot be
fully explained by Confucian ideology. That is why the ancestral shrine paintings
examined in this study are divided into three categories, Wondangdo (願堂圖, i.e.“paintings of the Buddhist ancestral prayer hall’), Gammoyeojaedo and Yeongwido
((靈位圖, i.e. “paintings of ancestral tablets”).
It is generally agreed that ancestral shrine paintings were made by ordinary
families in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries when Korea’s traditional
hierarchical society began to crumble, together with various rules and restrictions with
respect to ancestral memorial rites, eventually exerting an influence upon East Asian
folk paintings of the period. The production of these paintings is also related with the growing awareness of the importance of holding ancestral memorial rites among
common people in Korean society in the modern period. According to Joseon pungsokjip (Folk Customs and Traditions in Korea), published in 1914 by Imamura
Tomo (今村鞆, 1870-1943), a Japanese police officer and amateur ethnologist, “those from poor families make their ancestral tablets with cloth, while those who are even
poorer make them with jibang (紙榜, paper ancestral tablet), which they put on a folding screen or a woven straw mat” when they hold an ancestral memorial rite.
Uirye junchik (儀禮準則, Rules and Regulations on Family Rites and Ceremonies)
established by the Japanese colonial authority, i.e. the Government-General of Korea,
in 1934 also supported the use of the paper ancestral tablet, encouraging Korean
people to put a paper tablet on the dok (櫝, wooden ancestral tablet chest) or, if unavailable, on a folding screen. The emergence of the paper ancestral tablet
eventually led to the production of, and demand for, ancestral shrine paintings that depicted wondang (願堂, prayer hall), sadang (祠堂, shrine) or gyoui (交椅,
ceremonial chair).
Buddhist ancestral memorial rites have been widely performed in Korea ever since
they were established during the Goryeo period (918-1392). The Buddhist rituals held
to console the spirits of the dead, such as Suryukjae (水陸齋, Water and Land Ceremony), among the royal households of early Joseon spread to the common
people, resulting in the production of Wondangdo paintings. Early paintings in this category depicted the Buddhist prayer halls called Wondang, which were, according to
Jogyesan songgwangsa sago (曹溪山松廣寺史庫, History Archives of Songgwangsa Temple in Jogyesan Mountain) or Jeongjo sillok (正祖實錄, The Annals of King
Jeongjo), built in many famous and revered Buddhist temples around the country. The widespread distribution of Buddhist prayer halls guided ordinary Buddhists to believe
that they could use the paintings of the prayer hall to pray to Buddha for the rebirth of their ancestors in the blissful land of Buddha, just as the royal households had
done before them. It is interesting to note that one such painting - currently stored in the Brooklyn Museum, New York - was, according to the postscript written on it,
made in Joseon in 1811 during the reign of King Sunjo (純祖, r. 1800-1834), which immediately followed the era of the reigns of King Yeongjo (r. 1724-1776) and King
Jeongjo (r. 1776-1800), when the production of Wondangdo paintings reached its zenith. The record suggests that both the Buddhist prayer halls and the paintings
depicting them were used to pray for the peace not only of ancestral spirits but of the spirits of all those who needed consolation but were not entitled to be honored
by Confucian ceremonies. One may conclude then that Wondangdo are “paintings of the late Joseon period that were produced for the veneration of the dead and
depicted their spirit tablet at the center of a Buddhist altar.”
The paintings of the second group, Gammoyeojaedo, are divided into several different categories according to the characteristic details of each painting, such as the
painting of a shrine with ogujok (五具足, five Buddhist ceremonial objects) on the altar, the painting of a shrine only, and the adoption of various elements of Korean
folk paintings together with a shrine. Most of the paintings remaining today were created between the late nineteenth and early twentieth century and show little
influence of Confucianism, as if reflecting the drastic social changes Korea underwent
in that period, including the waning of the Confucian theory of moral obligation and the assigning of greater importance to the happiness and prosperity of individuals.
The paintings seem to focus more on the blessings individual worshippers wished to receive than on orthodox Confucian ceremonies. Finally, the paintings in the third category, Yeongwido, attest to a gradual simplification of the ancestral memorial
rituals during the last phase of Joseon, as shown by their simple composition in which the seat of the spirit tablet is highlighted. The paintings also appear to have
been used as a convenience by those who were unable to meet the requirements of Confucian ceremonies proper, or by those who needed to create a temporary place of
worship, a mortuary for instance, for their ancestors.
The earliest form of the ancestral shrine paintings was Wondangdo, in which Buddhist elements were initially given greater prominence before gradually being
replaced by the features of Confucian ceremonies, ultimately resulting in a significant
change marked by “the gradual increase of the elements of Confucian ideologies and folk paintings” during the late nineteenth century. The paintings produced in this
period tended to be more acceptable to the common people, as well as being cost effective in terms of their size and the use of techniques and colors, revealing that
Confucian ceremonies were spreading widely among ordinary people. Wondangdo
gradually developed into Gammoyeojaedo under the influence of Confucianism and folk painting, which probably contributed to a more widespread adoption of ancestral
shrine paintings among the common people.
The ancestral shrine paintings appear to show that the memorial rituals held to honor ancestral spirits during the late Joseon period were greatly influenced by the
Buddhist tradition. They show that the Korean people were still under a relatively strong influence of Buddhism some 400 years after Confucianism was adopted as the
ideological basis of Korean society by the ruling class of Joseon. It was not until the second half of the nineteenth century that, as shown by the ancestral shrine paintings
produced in the period, ordinary Korean people began to accept the Confucian teachings and incorporate them more actively into their ancestral ceremonies.
