The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of resilience on the relationship between perceived stress from daily lives and school adjustment on elementary school students. Once the relationship among stress, resilience and adjusting to school lives is analyzed, the influence of mediated effects of resilience on stress and adjustment is thoroughly examined.
In enacting the research, the questionnaire method is utilized, by which 364 elementary students in 6th grade of school situated in Gyong-gi province have participated. The supplementary resources include “The Daily Stress Scale of Korean Children” by Han Mi-hyun and Yoo An-jin(1995), “Resilience Scale for Children(RSC)” by Joo So-young and Lee Yang-hee(2007), and “School Life adjustment Scale” by Kim Ah-young(2002).
The collected data are scrutinized using SAS 9.3 and Mplus 7 program. Initially, SAS 9.3 is used to analyze the frequency of respondent demographic variables, followed by its reliability, basic statistical and the correlation analysis. Then, the measurement model is verified in order to evaluate the validity. To authenticate the measurement model, the confirmatory factor analysis is applied and Mplus 7 is used as a medium to induce the result. Furthermore, the structure equation modeling is adopted in verifying the research model. Again, the analysis program is Mplus 7. Bootstrapping method (Preacher & Hayes, 2004) is employed to analyze the mediating effect.
The results of this study are as follows.
First, the interrelationship among perceived stress, resilience, and adjustment to school life of elementary school students are found to be significantly correlated.
Second, the direct relationship between daily stress and school adjustment on a sixth grader is statistically noticeable and significant. It proves the effects of resilience mediating between the stress and school adjustment relation. Based on such results, further limitations and suggestions for prospective research are discussed.
