Society in the late Joseon Dynasty started with confusion of open sores from wars and the transition from Ming to Qing. Moreover, the will of the power of Joseon to overcome ‘The consciousness of the pro-Ming Dynasty and the anti-Qing Dynasty(尊明排淸意識)’ caused by the wars and the turnover of Hua-Yi(華夷) with much stronger ‘Hua-yi theory(華夷論)’ helped ‘China superiority thought(中華 意識)’ settle in the society of the late Joseon Dynasty as cultural hegemony. Thus, there is no doubt about the theory in academic circles that Korean classical novels, which were booming in the late Joseon Dynasty, include Chinese superiority. For example, the existence of numerous classical novels that developed based on the dynasty established by the ‘Han(漢族)’ in the past can be circumstantial evidence for this.

Aside from the widespread China superiority thought, however, the global order of East Asia in the period of the late Joseon Dynasty was reorganized focused on the Qing Dynasty; Joseon had already been in a tributary-appointment relationship with the Qing Dynasty since the Manchu War. Moreover, domination of the midlands by the Qing Dynasty, which was expected not to last over 100 years, continued even after the mid 18th century. At the same time, the Qing Dynasty was developing from a military power to a cultural power, producing the three wise kings. In addition, the cultural prosperity of the Qing Dynasty triggered ‘the movement of learning Qing culture(北學運動)’ in Joseon society in the late 18th century; the politics by in-powers started from the 19th century and the frequent appearance of foreign ships made the Joseon government more dependent on the Qing Dynasty. This implicates that awareness of China in the late Joseon Dynasty had developed in highly various patterns due to internal and external environmental variations of Joseon.

Literature is the fruit of society; moreover, Korean classical novels were produced in an environment where the thoughts of authors or scribes were reflected without any censorship due to the creation and distribution custom of unknown authorship and transcribing. As such, this research aimed to investigate awareness of China expressed in 8 novels based on the Yuan Dynasty and Qing Dynasty that were ignored in the strong China superiority thought of the late Joseon Dynasty, instead of the Han(漢族). As a result, <Jang-In-Gul-Jeon> with the background of the Yuan Dynasty shows the consciousness of the writer that ultimately supports the objective status of the Qing Dynasty through the Yuan Dynasty compared to the Qing Dynasty. <Gwak-Hae-Ryong-Jeon> expresses the consciousness of the writer that advocates domination of the midlands by foreign tribes through the Yuan Dynasty, which is described as an absolute Heavenly Kingdom. Comparing the power of the Qing Dynasty to ‘a group of the big serpent(大蟒),’ <Won-Hoe-Rok> reveals the fear and hostility of the writer against the Qing Dynasty. As for <Jing-Se-Bi-Tae-Rok>, which has the descriptive background of the Qing Dynasty, it shows toadyism toward Qing, beyond a positive recognition toward the Qing Empire. <Yoon-Seon-Ok-Jeon>, based on Joseon and the Qing Dynasty, sees the Qing Dynasty as a friendly nation to
Joseon, showing the consciousness of the writer that considers Joseon and the Qing Dynasty as groups sharing a common destiny. Meanwhile, novels about dynasty replacement in which the Han(漢族) collapsed due to foreign tribes discloses recognition of Hua-yi of writers: First, <Hyun-Soo-Moon-Jeon>, which shows consecutive dynasty replacement from Song to Jin and the Yuan Dynasty, includes ‘The out of Hua-yi thought(脫華夷觀)’ of the writer based on negative China superiority thought. Additionally, <Wang-Hyun-Jeon>, in which the Ming Dynasty is destroyed by the Qing shows the strong consciousness of the regaining superiority of China as well as the rupture of Hua-yi thought in various parts. With the background of the period of early Song and late Yuan, <Jang-Han-Jeol-Hyo-Gi> shows the transformation of the issue of Hua-yi into loyalty(忠義) at the point of dynasty replacement.

The result of this research reveals that Korean classical novels reflected not only the major awareness of China - ‘China superiority thought’ - but also various types of awareness of China or political and ideological thoughts in the late Joseon Dynasty fairly dimensionally. Moreover, the existence of novels based on the Yuan and Qing Dynasties including various awareness of China in the late Joseon Dynasty shows that the China background in Korean classical novels was not accepted indiscriminately but chosen among the specific consciousness of writers. That is, Korean classical novels not only pursued simple and popular interests but also played their own social role as literature through various epic settings, including choices of background.
