Adolescence is the period of experiencing physical, emotional, and cognitive changes passing from childhood. Not only children but also parents spend the time together.
This study was conducted to find the essence of parenting experience of children's adolescence in the process of phenomenological research. The participants in this study were 6 mothers who have experienced their children's adolescence, whose age is 19-year-old to 26-year-old now. The data were collected from April to September in 2016, and 3-5 times one-to-one in-depth interviews were performed. Each interview lasted from 45 minutes to an hour and a half. Data acquisition and analysis are performed simultaneously, and Colaizzi(1978)’s phenomenological method was applied to analyze the data.
As a result, 27 sub-categories and 8 categories of themes are emerged. From the research finding, the essential meaning of parenting experience of children's adolescence is as follows.
The 8 themes are “vaguely preparing for the adolescence of a child”, “cognizing that my child reaches adolescence”, “various emotions are entangled”, “wring the heart, but solving the problems one by one”, “striving to solve a tangled relationship”, “feeling that a child out of the parent's frame is larger than the parents themselves”, “the relationship with a child is beginning to get easier”,and “growing up together with a child who is out of the parents’ bosom”.
Parents who have experienced child’s adolescence believe that when their child arrive at the period, his behaviors are worse and worse because of their controlling parenting style and lack of understanding. So they try to change the parenting style somehow, but experience the complex feelings at the same time. The feelings are “regret and sorriness for the strict parenting style”, “sadness and feeling dejected for their children who don’t see parents’heart”, “anxiety and feeling hard for the frequent quarrel with their children”, and “enduring a long wait or giving up the situation.” However, they believe in their children, try to understand and recognize their personality, and persevere in waiting. Though sometimes another family members get stressed because of their sister or brother’s unacceptable behavior, they come over the period together as they help one another with an effort of mother or the advice of friends and relatives.
They feel the period of adolescence is over when they have honest conversations with the child and good communication is made without acting irritated. As time goes, their relations are changed from the vertical ones with the command-and-control to horizontal ones like comfortable friends who talk together. Even though they feel hard because of mental stress and energy consumption, the parents think that the period of adolescence is necessary process for their children to grow into healthy adult. They believe their children can establish their subjecthood.
Based on the results of this study, two essential meanings of children’s adolescence experienced by parents are derived. Those are “growing together after going through hardship” and “Emotions entangled like thread windings”. Parents who experienced children’s adolescence could accept their children as individuals not like “a child in the bosom”, but ‘a child separated from the invisible umbilical cord’. They are humble enough to learn from their mistakes, and take one step further with composure and an old hand.
In conclusion, this study have found the essential meanings of parenting experience of children’s adolescence. It will gain a toehold to develop parent education program including the meanings of parents’ experience.
