The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of character education activity using folk tale picture books on self-esteem and pro-social behavior of young children, and to provide helpful basic data for desirable character education of young children. The following research problems were established to achieve these objectives of this study.
First, what is the effect of character education activity using folk tale picture book on self-esteem of young children?
Secondly, what is the effect of character education activity using folk tale picture books on pro-social behavior of young children?
To this end, this study used 40 young children, 20 each from two 5-year old classes in L Daycare Center located in G-si. The two groups were identified to be a homogeneous group, and they were classified into an experiment group and a control group. Self-esteem that Kim, Young Sook(1997) modified and supplemented a perception scale for young children of Harter and Pike(1984) and prosocial behavior test tool developed by Kim, young Ok(2003) based on prosocial behavior valuation scale of Babcock and Hartle were used as the research tool. This study composed 20~25 minute activity and conducted 24 sessions of the character education activity using folk tale picture books twice a week for 12 weeks from Mar 3, 2016 to May 18, 2016. For data analysis, the data obtained in this study was statistically processed using SPSS/ 20.0, and conducted prepost test through independent sample t-test.
Results of this study are as follows.
First, it was identified that character education activity using folk tale picture books makes effect on self-esteem of young children. Subfactors of self-esteem as cognitive ability, peer acceptance, physical competence, mothers’ acceptance, and self-acceptance showed significant difference.
Secondly, it was identified that character education activity using folk tale picture books makes effect on pro-social behavior of young children. Subfactors of pro-social behavior as leadership, helping, communication, sharing, making attempts, sharing, empathy, and emotional control showed significant difference.
Taken together, these results show that character education activity using folk tale picture books showed effect on improving pro-social behavior of establishing a positive relationship with others based on self-esteem as improvement in positive understanding of oneself that it can be used as a strategy of educational activities in early childhood educational institutes.
