그림책에 내재된 글과 그림의 아이러니 분석 : 조원희 작품을 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구의 의미는 그림책에 내재된 글과 그림의 관계 속에서 재미있는 아이러니를 찾아보는데 있다. 연구 대상으로 선정된 조원희 작품의 특징은 글의 간결함과 구체적인 그림 묘사이다. 글과 그림의 관계는 그림책의 즐거운 요소로 작용한다.
인간에게는 서로 다른 상황을 자연스럽게 연결시키는 능력이 있다. 이것은 어린이가 그림책을 읽는 과정에서도 나타난다. 각각의 페이지, 글과 그림의 서사적 거리를 이해하면서 독자는 작가들이 심어놓은 여러 기법들을 만나게 된다. 그 중 역설, 모순, 호기심, 긴장감 등을 유발하는 아이러니는 독자에게 낯선 여행을 선사한다. 이런 경험은 그림책을 펼치는 순간 가능하기도 하지만, 무심코 지나친다면 색다른 경험의 문을 만날 수 없다. 아이러니란, 예상 밖의 결과가 빚은 모순이나 부조화이다. 아이러니는 어휘의 의미나 맥락보다 그것이 처한 상황에 의해서 결정된다. 그림책에 사용되는 수많은 기법 중에서 글과 그림이 자아내는 아이러니가 독자에게 즐거움을 선사하는 이유는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 아이러니는 상식을 벗어난다. 둘째, 아이러니는 모순을 가지고 있다. 셋째, 아이러니는 희생자를 만든다. 본 연구자는 그림책과 아이러니에 대한 이론을 바탕으로 조원희 작품에 나타난 글과 그림에 내재된 아이러니를 파악해 보았다. 그 결과 다음과 같은 특성을 찾을 수 있었다.

첫째, 글과 그림은 서로 어긋나게 위치하고 있다.
둘째, 글보다 그림의 파괴력이 더 크다.
셋째, 그림의 색채는 글의 어조를 무시한다.
넷째, 그림은 글이 거론하지 않은 대상을 필요이상으로 크게 배치한다.
다섯째, 그림은 글을 흉내 내고 있다.

이상을 종합해본 결과 조원희 작품 속에 나타난 아이러니는 독자들의 관심을 사기에 충분했다. 페리 노들먼에 의하면, 문학의 아이러니는 표현된 것에 비해 파악한 것이 많을 때 발생한다고 한다. 독서의 즐거움은 독자의 습관과 자세에서 나온다. 문학을 교육적 도구가 아닌 향유의 대상으로 바라보는 것이 본 연구가 지향하는 바이다.
