In dramas, various aspects of human beings are adopted in accordance with the time that is constantly changing in order to attract audience’s mind. With an assumption that it is possible to figure out receivers’ desire in a certain period with the characters found in them, this study attempts to understand receivers’ expectations and desire reflected to male characters in fantasy TV dramas. Do Min-jun in <My Love From The Star> is a fantastic character born as a character that not only satisfies receivers’ psychology of expectations but also may be anywhere in reality through various dramatic devices.
It sets up some aspect of unreality that he is ‘an alien that has been living on Earth for 400 years’. The aspect of fantasy that he uses his power and devotes his life only for one woman and awareness that I am the only one that communicates and has relationship with him satisfy female receivers in terms of relational fantasy. He is a character that maximizes the charms of male characters that have been created in melodramas so far. His communicative or empathetic power gets neutralized or reinforced only by me. Here, ‘I’ is realized as a character named ‘Cheon Song-yi’ within the drama but is, in fact, realized as ‘we ourselves’ to the number of audience watching the drama outside the television.
Do Min-jun equipped with supernatural powers and innocent love works as a personal hero guarding me even sacrificing his own life in the world that is full of merciless enemies that cannot even get caught by the general judicial system. As it is hard to be freed from violence in our everyday lives these days, such activity of a personal hero does seem even more desperately needed, which makes ‘me’ feel the existence of Do Min-jun as real pleasure. In addition to that, relation between first love and the past life cliche makes the relationship more ardent. Meanwhile, this overthrows it and depicts the obvious relationship not obvious in consideration of the eye level of receivers even more enhanced. Twisting the alien cliche that has been depicted in public culture, it does not alienate the union with the earthian woman by escaping the inevitability like green blood, an alien in mask, or having to go back to his own planet.
In Chapter 2, it is attempted to understand Do Min-jun’s character in <My Love From The Star> generally through his physical, social, and psychological qualities. Though he can save other people using his superior physical powers, he has tried to suppress or neutralize his own supernatural powers and hide his deep heart from others. Isolation is one of the typical characteristics of fantasy characters equipped with supernatural powers. But they do not use their supernatural powers for the wellbeing of the society/system, and when the taboo is broken, their exterior does not change, which gives the receivers fun from unexpectedness.
Also, Do Min-jun wants to reveal himself as he is but he cannot do so. This stimulates humans’ basic desire needing acknowledgement and amplifies their sorrow about Do Min-jun. Lastly, Do Min-jun’s inner side is hard to be revealed through relationships around but can be revealed only through interview or epilogues. Do Min-jun who cannot unclose his deep heart just as it is does talk about or show his inner side directly to the audience merely through interviews.
In Chapter 3, physical, social, and emotional desire satisfied by Do Min-jun is examined. First, concerning physical desire, desire for physical security, desire for the body to be near, and innocence of sexual union are dealt with.
Second, about social desire, Cheon Song-yi’s fall in the drama is examined in relation to the social status of contemporaries. In contemporary society, people are apt to fall all of a sudden regardless of their ability or volition. The drama satisfies social desire through the social status with the character like Do Min-jun who is willing to support exclusively.
Lastly, in this age in which the object to be communicated is ambiguous, we cannot be entirely freed from others’ eyes, but in private space, we want to express ourselves and seek true comfort from someone else, and this study examines that emotional desire.
Do Min-jun is an ideal character that satisfies human desire in many ways. It amplifies the favorable responses or feelings of audience watching him and makes them want the two’s love to be realized and broadens the horizons of their expectations. Focusing on the fact that Do Min-jun’s power is what anyone wants to have and the power and its use are oriented to only one person, audience enjoy the dramatic fun with the tension enhanced whenever each of the limitations hidden behind the power is expressed. With those diverse charms, audience expect to believe in the presence of Do Min-jun gradually, which makes the presence of Do Min-jun’s character and the setting of <My Love From The Star> get to acquire probability naturally.
However, recalling the fact that desire that everyone gets to have naturally is realized only through fantasy is such a pity and regret as human beings living in reality. In that reality, people want to believe in the world within a well-organized fantasy TV dramas more and more, and in the future, such characters in fantasy TV dramas seem to appear more and more gradually.
This study examines characters contributing to satisfying audience’s desire to get clues about phenomena preferred in fantasy dramas and anticipate the possibility of dramas afterwards. However, <My Love From The Star> may not represent all the other fantasy dramas, there is the limitation of this study. In the future, this author will analyze other dramas, too, to make up for the limitation of this study.
