The purpose of this study was to investigate actual condition and teachers’ awareness on storytelling mathematics activity for young children. The subjects were 132 day care center's teachers and the data was collected using a questionnaire. The collected data was analyzed using the frequencies, the percentage, the mean, the standard deviation, the multiple response analysis and the t-test. The cases were analyzed by the type of the stories and the key words.
The results of this study were as follows ; First, 0.05% of the teachers answered that they had a type of training for the storytelling mathematics activity for young children while 20.5% answered that they have experience running such activity. The activity was often performed once a week as a large group. The most commonly used topic was the basic concepts on number. Teachers who have experience running storytelling mathematics activity found developing activities connecting a story and mathematical concepts difficult while satisfied with child’s greater interests on math through the activities. In real cases, daily problems were most in used as stories, and storytelling process was most commonly found.
Second, the teachers were skeptical of their knowledge on storytelling mathematics activity although they recognize the necessity of such activity in developing a child’s interests on mathematics and problem solving skill. Often, various fairy tales, home or daily goods were made used of the types of the stories. Story telling or letting a child explain what he or she has been taught were most commonly used telling process. The teachers also expressed the necessity of a solid curriculum or a training program for teachers to activate the storytelling mathematics activity for young children. Teachers who had a type of training for storytelling mathematics activity for young children chose more variety of stories and processes in developing activities than those who hadn’t.
