The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effects of ego-resilience on relations between perceived parents' empathic attitude and peer relationship for middle school students. Concretely, this study looked into the direct effects of perceived parents' empathic attitude on the peer relationship by dividing empathic attitude of father and mother. Also, this study verified the mediating effect of an ego-resilience between parents' empathic attitude and peer relationship.
For that purpose, the investigator conducted a survey with 880 first, second and third grade middle school students from seven middle schools located in Seoul, Gyunggi-do, gathering data from them. All of collected data were statistically treated with the SPSS 18.0 and AMOS 18.0 programs. Mean, standard deviation, skewness, and kurtosis were obtained to review the descriptive statistics quantity of each major variable used in the study. Correlation analysis was conducted to examine connections among the major variables. In order to see the difference between the father's and mother's empathic attitude, T-test was performed. In addition, A structural equation model analysis and bootstrapping were performed to figure out the structural relations among parents' empathic attitude, ego-resilience, and peer relationship.
The findings were as follows:
First, the study examined differences in the empathic attitude between father and mother. Depending on the sub-factors, perspective capacity and cold emotional reaction are father is significantly higher than the mother, whereas emotional perception and empathy emotion reaction are mother is significantly higher than the father, showed the difference.
Second, the direct effects of the father's empathic attitude on peer relationship was significant, but mother's empathic attitude was insignificant.
Third, the result of the mediating effect of the ego-resilience between parents' empathic attitude and middle school students' peer relationship is as follows. The father's empathic attitude and ego-resilience in peer relationships showed a partial mediating effect, whereas the mother's empathic attitude and ego-resilience in the peer relationships showed full mediating effects.
This study confirmed that parents' empathic attitude has a difference and that the father's empathic attitude plays an important role on peer relationship. Also, ego-resilience had greater impacts on peer relationship than parents' empathic attitude. According to the results, this study have significant to provide basic data that help parent education on positive peer relationship for middle school students that help development of programs to improve the ego-resilience.
