The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of young children's experience of a grandma storytelling program on their personality and awareness of the elderly. Two research questions were posed:
1. What effects does a grandma storytelling program have on the personality of preschoolers?
2. What effects does a grandma storytelling program have on the awareness of preschoolers about the elderly?
The subjects in this study were 100 preschoolers and three grandma storytellers in five daycare centers located in the city of Gimhae. The preschoolers were at the western age of five. An experimental group and a control group were made up of 50 preschoolers each. The instrument used to measure personality development was Kwon Oh-jung(20040's Personality Rating Scale for Parents that was based on Conners(1987)'s Personality Test. This scale that consisted of five subareas was used with some modifications. The instrument used to find out the awareness of the preschoolers about the elderly was Han Hyun-ji(2005)'s modified version of Jung Mi-sil(1995)'s Awareness Inventory for the Elderly that was based on Lee Sun-ja(1989)'s Elderly Scale and Kim Kwang-sook (1887)'s Elderly View Scale. This scale consisted of five subareas. After a pretest was conducted, the grandma storytelling program was implemented, and then a posttest was carried out.
When the young children's personality and awareness of the elderly were assessed in the pretest, there were no significant differences between the experimental group and the control group. So the two groups turned out equivalent, and the collected pretest and posttest data were analyzed by a statistical package SPSS WIN 21.0. To make a comparative analysis, t-test was utilized. The experiment was implemented in eight sessions for eight weeks from September 21 to November 16, 2015, once a week. The experimental group listened to personality-related fairy tales told by the grandma storytellers for 20 minutes each according to the themes of the yearly plan of Korean Studies Advancement Center, and then the group sung traditional children's songs together. The control group engaged in routine educational activities according to the Nuri curriculum under the guidance of their homeroom teacher.
The findings of the study were as follows:
First, the experience of participating in the grandma storytelling program exerted a significant influence on the personality of the preschoolers. The preschoolers of the experimental group were statistically significantly ahead of the control group ones in the five subareas that were basic life habits, self-establishment, community spirit, physical development and sociability. Therefore the grandma storytelling program could be one of effective alternatives to facilitate the personality development of preschoolers.
Second, the experience of participating in the grandma storytelling program served to improve the awareness of the preschoolers about elderly people. The preschoolers of the experimental group were statistically significantly ahead of the control group ones in all the six subareas, which were image of the elderly and awareness of physical characteristics, intellectual characteristics, personality traits, social relationships and family relationships. Therefore the grandma storytelling program could be one of effective alternatives to change young children's awareness of the elderly for the better. Moreover, this program could be said to be one of valuable integrated programs to boost intergenerational interaction and mutual understanding by letting young children keep meeting friendly grandmas and listen to them every week instead of merely conveying a particular story.
