The main goal of this study is to investigate what impact role-playing games that use picture books and physical movement activities has on three-year-old children in terms of their emotional intelligence. The researcher asks the following questions to achieve the goal:

    (1) Do picture book based role-playing games and physical movement activities have an effect on the emotional intelligence of three-year -old children?
    (2) Do picture book based role-playing games and physical movement activities have an effect on the sub-components of emotional intelligence of three-year-old children?

The test subjects for the study were 26 three-year-old children in a children's daycare center located in Suwon City, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. More specifically, the children participating in the study were divided into two groups: the first one consisted of 14 children (9 girls and 5 boys) and the second one (control group) consisted of 12 children (6 girls and 6 boys). As a research tool for the study to measure emotional intelligence of young children, the researcher utilized "Children's Emotional Intelligence Measuring Index for Teachers" (50 questions for children aged between 3 and 6) developed by K. Kim (1999). The test procedures involved giving one picture book a week to each child in the first group and allowing them to participate in role-playing games and integrated physical movement activities for 12 weeks. Meanwhile, the children in the control group were taught in accordance with the curriculum prescribed by the current state-mandated Nuri Educational Program. The SPSS statistical program was used to process the data collected by the researcher. More specifically, the researcher derived averages and standard deviations for emotional intelligence scores of the first (test) group and the control group. In order to calculate the difference between the two groups, the researcher relied on the Mann–Whitney test – one of the non-parametric statistical techniques.

The results of the test were as follows. First, when it comes to the total emotional intelligence score the average emotional intelligence score of the children who participated in picture book based role-playing games and physical movement activities was higher than that of the children in the control group; and the difference was statistically significant. This indicates that activities involving picture book based role-playing games and physical movement have a positive effect on children's emotional intelligence levels. Second, when it comes to the sub-components of emotional intelligence, the average score of the children who participated in picture book based role-playing games and physical movement activities was higher than that of the children in the control group; and the difference between two groups was statistically significant. The sub-components of emotional intelligence included (1) recognizing self-emotions and expressing them; (2) emotional control; (3) impulse control; (4) using self-emotions; (5) empathy for the emotions of other people; (6) relationships with teachers; and (6) relationships with peers. It shows that the activities have a positive effect on the sub-components of emotional intelligence in children.

In conclusion, this study proves that activities involving picture book based role-playing games and physical movement can enhance children's emotional experience; and this is an effective way for them to improve their emotional intelligence.
