지역신문 뉴스리터러시를 통한 청소년 시민성 발달 연구

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 지역신문 뉴스리터러시 교육을 통해 초등학교 5학년을 대상으로 참여관찰과 집단 인터뷰를 중심으로 진행하였다. 지역 특성상 학교 현장에서 뉴스리터러시의 목표는 어떠하며, 방향은 어떠한지를 먼저 살펴볼 계획이다. 또한 학교 현장에서 교사와 학생들의 상호작용은 어떻게 이루어지고 있는지 알아보았다. 이후 뉴스리터러시가 학교현장에 도입되었을 때 한계점이나 문제점은 무엇인지도 파악하였다. 이를 통해 청소년들은 어떠한 요인으로 시민성 발달에 영향을 주는지에 대해 중점적으로 연구하였다. 이밖에 이론에서는 체득할 수 없었던 세한 것들을 면밀하고 깊숙하게 연구를 진행하였다.
연구 수행은 전남 광양시 금호동에 위치한 제철남초등학교 5학년 23명의 학생을 대상으로 참여관찰을 실시하였다. 연구결과는 다음의 내용으로 정리하였다. 우선 신문활용교육을 10년 넘게 담당해온 교사는 신문활용교육 인식은 매우 긍정적이었다. 특히 지역신문은 학습자가 처음 신문을 접하기에 매우 좋은 재료라고 말하며, 흥미 유발에 가장 큰 도움이 되었다고 언급하였다. 연구참여자들 또한 지역신문에 실린 가족들의 이야기를 보고 함께 토론하고 질문과 답변을 반복적으로 하는 과정을 통해 신문에서 보는 간접 경험이 아닌 밖으로 나가 직접 체험해보면서 지역에 대한 관심도가 높아졌음을 알 수 있었다.
하지만 본 연구에서는 다음의 제한점들을 통해 좀 더 나은 연구가 제안되길 바라본다. 첫째, 교육계와 언론이 서로 협력이 필요하다. 교사는 교육계와 신문사의 협력을 통해 신문을 진정한 학습교재가 되어야 한다고 언급했다. 교육계와 신문사의 협력을 통해 신문활용교육을 하기 위한 기반을 마련해야 한다는 것이다. 둘째, 적성교육에 치중하기 보다는 기존 과목과 연결시켜 실시해야 한다. 학교 현장에서 NIE를 실시할 때 특별활동이나 방과 후 적성교육보다는 기존 과목과 연결시켜 실시하는 것이 아이들이 NIE와 친숙해 질 수 있다. 즉, 친숙하게 한다는 것은 신문활용교육을 단기적으로 끝나는 것보다 장기적으로 교육을 할 수 있는 프로그램을 구축해야 한다는 것이다. 셋째, 교재개발에 노력을 기울여야 한다. 아이들의 수준별로 프로그램을 짤 필요는 없다. 정규 수업이 아닌 말 그대로 뉴스리터러시기 때문이다. 매일 쏟아져 나오는 기사가 다르듯 수업 계획도 달라야 한다. 본 연구는 디지털 시대로 접어들면서 신문은 위기에 접어들었고, 뉴스의 난립으로 인한 상황에서 청소년들이 올바른 뉴스 해석을 위해 지역신문을 통한 뉴스리터러시가 지역공동체를 포함해 시민성 함양을 구축하고 있는지에 대해 긍정적인 효과를 확인하였다는 점에서 의의를 찾을 수 있다.
