The purpose of this study is that identifying the effectiveness of narcissistic tendency to school violence, and testing moderating effects of self-esteem & self-esteem stability between narcissistic tendency and school violence. Middle and high school students filled out self-reported questionnaire on two dimensional narcissistic tendency (self-directed narcissistic, narcissistic with dependency on others), school violence experience, self-esteem, self-esteem stability. SPSS 21.0 version used for statistic analysis of data. The results are as follows.
First, The narcissistic tendency with dependency on others is significantly related school violence experience in a positive way.
Second, self-esteem and self-esteem stability moderating effect of narcissistic tendency on school violence experience. However, moderating effects of self-esteem and self-esteem stability on school violence experience were differed by narcissistic tendency’s sub-factors. First of all, the more who has self-directed narcissistic tendency, the less school violence experience appeared, except the group of high self-esteem with low self-esteem stability. Especially, the group of high self-esteem with high self-esteem stability showed a strong tendency that the more who has self-directed narcissistic tendency, the less school violence experience appeared. However, the group of high self-esteem with low self-esteem stability shows that the more who has self-directed narcissistic tendency, the more school violence experience appeared. It confirms that the person who has healthy self-directed narcissistic tendency could show violence if who has unstable self concept.
The case of narcissistic tendency with dependency on others, all group show that the more who has narcissistic tendency with dependency on others, the more school violence experience appeared. Moreover, the moderating effect of self-esteem and self-esteem stability strengthen positive relationship between narcissistic tendency with dependency on others and school violence experience. But most of all, the group of high self-esteem with low self-esteem stability shows the most significant positive relationship between narcissistic tendency with dependency on others and school violence experience. It is the similar result with self-directed narcissistic tendency that the person who has self-evaluative self-esteem is high, but weak its base, has more school violence experience. However, there is a different result that the group of high self-esteem with high self-esteem stability shows the more who has narcissistic tendency with dependency on others, the more school violence experience appeared. It means that the effects of narcissistic tendency with dependency on others to school violence experience is more powerful than moderating effects of self-esteem and self-esteem stability.
The results show that the effect of narcissistic tendency on school violence experience is differed by dimension of narcissism. In addition, the moderating effect of self-esteem and self-esteem stability is different as well. It means that self-directed narcissistic tendency groups have a positive relationship with school violence experience, except high self-esteem with low self-esteem stability group. However, narcissistic tendency with dependent on others groups have a positive relationship at school violence experience no matter what level of self-esteem and self-esteem stability. Especially, the group of high self-esteem with low self-esteem stability shows a positive relationship at school violence experience in both type of narcissistic tendency, and it shows the significant highest numerical value in β-value. For the moderating effect of self-esteem and self-esteem stability, narcissistic tendency with dependent on others shows more a strong relationship at school violence experience than self-directed narcissistic tendency.
The implication of this research is that it is possible to expand the understanding the effect of narcissistic tendency by analyzing the effect of two-dimensional narcissistic tendency on school violence experience for school violence perpetrators. The result shows that narcissistic tendency with dependency on others affects on school violence experience more powerfully than moderating effect of self-esteem and self-esteem stability do. It suggests that it’s better to focus on pathological narcissistic tendency than self-esteem and self-esteem stability when developing program for school violence perpetrators. Furthermore, this study has another implication that it is needed to analyze school violence experience in depth with self-esteem and self-esteem stability for school violence perpetrators, so that we can get a clue for an understanding of non-consistent result for the relationship between self-esteem and school violence. As the major research results, The group of high self-esteem adolescent could have a chance to be violent at school if they have low self-esteem stability. Second, the group of high self-esteem with low self-esteem stability shows the highest frequency of school violence experience having narcissistic tendency with dependent on others. It has an important implication for developing school violence prevention program. It suggests that comprehensive approaches are needed, which consider self-esteem, self-esteem stability, and narcissistic tendency when counselor running program for school violence perpetrators.
