Chilseong Painting(七星圖) is buddhist art to illustrate a variety of stars covering the sky, especially Polar Star and Big Dipper, with Buddhism and Taoism-style iconography. As Korean-style buddhist paintings in the late Joseon Dynasty showing a compromise between Buddhism and Taoism directly, more than about 476 Chilseong Paintings in existence turned out to be produced explosively until the 19th and 20th Centuries. The mass production of Chilseong Paintings in the late Joseon Dynasty is related to Buddhism's accommodation of various folk beliefs and prevalence of Chilseong beliefs such as having a good health and longevity(無病長壽) and having a son(生子得男).
Seonchaldaebonsan(禪刹大本山), Beomeo Temple(梵魚寺) is one of three main temples in Gyeongnam region and owns about 35 Buddhist paintings, including 6 Chilseong Paintings forming a large proportion of them. In particular, Chilseong Painting of Beomeo Temple's Geukrakam(1861), identified and restituted recently, was made by multi pieces type of 11 pieces and has been meaningful in that it was produced in the earliest period among Chilseong Paintings of Beomeo Temple. Chilseong Paintings in Beomeo Temple are a total of 6 works and 14 pieces and they can be classified into two types: single piece type of 3 works including 3 pieces and multi pieces type of 3 works including 11 pieces. They has designed to hermitages of Geukrakam(極樂庵), Anyangam(安養庵), Sajaam(獅子庵), Daesungam(大聖庵) and shown the time characteristics as well as the painting configurations encompassing the 19th and 20th Centuries. The multi pieces type of Chilseong Paintings in existence are a total of 27 and in terms of the time characteristics, they tends to be produced by 7, 8, 9, and 11 pieces during the 19th Century, while 3 pieces during 20th Century. In terms of the painting configurations, meanwhile, the number of their pieces has increased due to presenting Chilseong Tathagata(七星如來) as a main Buddha on each piece according to the fashion of Chilseong beliefs in the 19th Century, while the portion of Taoism icon has grown bigger than that of Chilseong Tathagata in the 20th Century.
The configuration and style of Chilseong Paintings in Beomeo Temple are differ from each other because they were made by different leading monk painters. At first, Chilseong Painting of Beomeo Temple's Geukrakam(1861) was produced by Youngdamsunjong(影潭善宗), a monk painter mainly active in Seonam Temple(仙巖寺) of Jeolla-Do. Also, it partially shows the painting style of GeumamCheonyeo(錦庵天如) and the characteristics of Kwanhaeng(瓘幸), a monk painter of Gyeongsang-Do. In addition to, it has been revealed by the Painting Record(畵記) that the painting was made in Miryang Pyochung Temple(表忠寺). It means that there was the interaction of Manilhoe(萬日會) between Beomeo and Pyochung Temple. Secondly, Chilseong Painting of Beomeo Temple's Geukrakam(1891) was made by Mingyu(玟奎), a monk painter who produced 3 works around Gyeongsang-Do. It took the painting style of Suryongkijeon(水龍琪銓), a monk painter mainly active in the same area at that time. Besides, it is characterized by highlighting the Great Bear(七元星君) at the bottom of the painting and dividing the icon group by semi-circular images at the top of the painting. Thirdly, Chilseong Painting of Beomeo Temple's Anyangam(1914) was drawn by Wanho(玩虎), a monk painter who produced about 10 Chilseong Paintings around Busan at that time. His paintings are unique in that Chilseongkwang samjon(熾盛光三尊) is placed in front of the center of the painting, dense clouds are represented in an empty space, and traditional patterns of buddhist paintings are depicted. Since then, his painting style and configuration have an effect on the most of Chilseong Paintings made around Gyeongsang-Do in 20th Century. Lastly, Chilseong Painting of Beomeo Temple's Sajaam(1940) was painted by Taein(太印) and that of Beomeo Temple's Daesungam(1941) was manufactured by Dalgi(達基) respectively. Although two paintings have the iconic similarity because of the exchange of Taein and Dalgi, Taein's work partially reflected the style of Jeongyeon(定淵) known as one of the Gyeryongsan school(鷄龍山畵派) and Youngmo(永模), a monk painter of Gyeongsang-Do, while Dalgi's work took the style of Sehong(世洪), a monk painter.
Beomeo Temple has operated more than 60 Temple Unions(寺刹契) since the late Joseon Dynasty, and it has produced buddhist paintings prolifically based on such economic strength of the Temple Union. It has known from the Painting Record that members of the Temple Union donated money and did Buddhist service actively such as Chilseong Painting of Beomeo Temple's Geukrakam(1861) and Manilhoe, Chilseong Painting of Beomeo Temple's Geukrakam(1891) and donation of Gap Union members(甲契員). Also, Chilseong Paintings in Beomeo Temple are meaningful as the materials of art history because they show various characteristics of the painting style by embracing not only traditional patterns of buddhist paintings, but also the elements of the modern buddhist paintings to adapt the modernization.
