The purpose of this study was to examine how emotion coaching art therapy program makes positive effects on the self-control and abilities of interpersonal relation of vocational high school students.
In order to conduct this study, 20 vocational high school students in D-city were recruited on the first come and first served basis and they were randomly assigned into two groups which were the experimental group and the control group.
To make differences between two groups, the experimental group participated in emotion coaching art therapy program two times a week; therefore, total 12 sessions were performed. On the other hand, the control group did not get any treatment.
In order to verify the effectiveness of the program, self-control and interpersonal measurements were used as a methodology. Also, both groups performed preliminary and post-mortem inspection.
The findings of this study may be summed up as follows;
First of all, according to the analysis of covariance, this study shows that emotion coaching art therapy program made a meaningful improvement on self-control for the participants in the experimental group, compared to the control group. Especially, according to analyzed sub-factors, the participants in the experimental group showed noticeable scale changes in the pursuit of challenges, preference for simple task and physical activity, ego-centrism, impulsivity and temperament of anger.
Second of all, according to the analysis of covariance, this study shows that participants’ abilities of interpersonal relation in the experimental group have improved through the emotion coaching art therapy program. After sub-factors were analyzed, the result showed that participants in this program made the significant improvement on a feeling of sensitivity, intimacy and openness.
Lastly, after emotion coaching art therapy program finished, the participants were asked to write up self reflections for the researcher to perform qualitative analysis and two questions were included: program satisfaction and activities feedback. As a result, the participants gave positive evaluations for program configuration, profitability, hope of participating, invite degree, and facilitator satisfaction. Also, the participants gave affirmative responses toward inner and outer empowerment and interpersonal interchange since they felt that their level of understanding toward themselves and others have improved.
In conclusion, this study may be evaluated as meaningful due to the fact that emotion coaching art therapy program can make the improvement on self-control and abilities of interpersonal relation of vocational high school students.
