(Abstract)
Nowadays, as the travel industry grows and becomes increasingly more competitive, many countries have undertaken great efforts to maximize limited resources and increase their economies by initiating and developing cultural heritage asset in tourism. Most cultural heritages are considered as what is just preserved and only remained. However, cultural heritages, as it were, software in tourism can be revitalized grafted such 'storytelling' referring the stories which are involved with the cultural heritage, such as legends, folk tales and mythes. This dissertation is a study of producing some strategies on regional revitalization through the development of cultural heritage resources especially in Gyeongju.
The needs and targets of this study are presented in the Chapter 1 and the concept and background of cultural heritage tourism and storytelling are defined in the Chapter 2. Based on this review, overseas and domestic cases are examined along with the analysis of current situations in Chapter 3, Anbowasze castle in France, Mt. Guhwa in China and Kyushoo-monokatari in Japan as the overseas cases and as the domestic cases KimSaggat in Yeongwol, Simcheong in Koksung and Nongae in Jinju. In Chapter 4, the contents of cultural heritages and the current tourism state in Gyeongju are surveyed. The the pivotal point of this study is the chapter 5, which is a creative project in order to revitalize the tourism industry of Gyeongju utilizing valuable cultural heritages. The conclusion and the recommendation are referred to the Chapter 6.
As the introduction of storytelling on cultural heritage centered tourism resources is at an initial stage in Korea, it is not easy to get enough theory and research the case. Yet, tourism industry not only need to introduce more active and practical strategies in various fields for tourists but also need to contribute its role to improve the regional economy.
This study shows that enhancing the storytelling strategy is a way of developing tourism industry through the introduction of cultural heritage element and it apparently needs to be reinforced. It is highly recommended and is of great significance. For further studies, it is required that more efforts to review more successful and failure cases of storytelling which applies cultural-heritage tourism be made to revitalize tourism industry.
