This study is to find a relationship between social support and school adjustment of high school students, and ego-resilience was examined as a key mediator variable. The purpose of this study is as below.
First, high school students’ perception of social support, ego-resilience and school adjustment were examined if these three variables have any relevance and to see if school adjustment was affected by social support in mediation of ego-resilience. This study is to provide a basic data that can be used in development of appropriate teaching methods and professional on-site counseling techniques/program to increase positive high school adjustment.
To achieve this object, the research problems were selected as follows: first, What is the relationship among social support, ego-resil
ience and school adjustment of high school students? second, Does ego-resilience have significant mediating effect on a relationship betw
een social support (peer support, parent support and teacher support) and school adjustment of high school students?
To verify above problems, a questionnaire survey about social support, ego-resilience and school adjustment was conducted. The survey target was 1,200 students (freshmen, sophomore and senior year) of 5 high schools located in Seoul, Gyunggi Incheon and Chungchung-do. 1,176 units (recovery rate 98%) were recovered, but 21 insincerity units (skipping more than 1 questions or marking same reactions) were excluded, so total 1,155 units were used as a final data. The data was analyzed by SPSS 18.0 and AMOS 18.0 program. To analyze relationship between variables, the route of indirect effect of social support on school adjustment in mediation of ego-resilience and the route of direct effect of social support on school adjustment were set in research model. SEM (Structure Equation Model) was used to analyze the research model, and Sobel test was used to verify effect of ego-resilience on social support for school adjustment of high school students.
Analysis summary is as follow:
The analysis shows that there is a high positive correlation relationship among social support (peer support, parent support and teacher support), ego-resilience and school adjustment of high school students. All the sub-factors of social support had a positive effect on the ego-resilience, and all the sub-factors of social support and ego-resilience had a positive effect on school adjustment. Also, the relationship between social support (peer support, parent support and teacher support) and school adjustment, peer support and teacher support is part mediated by ego-resilience.
Thus, high social support and strong ego-resilience improves school adjustment of high school students. Furthermore, peer support and teacher support directly affects school adjustment, and in mediation of ego-resilience, they indirectly affect school adjustment as well. Based on this study, to create a positive school adjustment of high school students, systematic counseling and educational program development and implement, positive teaching method development to improve ego-resilience and professional training and intervention for school social work are highly required. Lastly, the limitation of the study based on the result and suggestions for further study are proposed.
