In this study, a research was conducted on two groups of multicultural students middle school students and upper-grade elementary school students to check whether each group’s receptive vocabulary and reading comprehension have improved and to check whether there is any relationship between the receptive vocabulary and reading comprehension skills within each group. To to this, two tests the Receptive Vocabulary component(REVT-R) of the Receptive and Expressive Vocabulary Test (REVT), and the Reading Comprehension part of the Reading Comprehension component of the Korea Institute for Special Education’s Basic Academic Achievement Test(KISE-BAAT) were given to a total of 48 students in the two groups. The results are as follows.
First, after comparing the receptive vocabulary skills of the middle school students group with those of the upper-grade elementary student group, it was discovered that the latter scored lower in the REVT-R test.
Second, comparing the two groups’ scores in the KISE-BAAT’s Reading Component, the upper-grade elementary student group generally showed lower scores than the middle school student group. Looking at the scores in the Component’s subelements (Word Comprehension, Sentence Completion, Vocabulary Choice, Sentence Arrangement, and Understanding Short Passages), it can be seen that the upper-grade elementary student group scored lower than the middle school student group in the Word Comprehension, Vocabulary Choice and the Understanding Short Passages subelements.
Third, when the correlations between the receptive vocabulary skills and the reading comprehension skills (Word Comprehension, Sentence Completion, Vocabulary Choice, Sentence Arrangement, and Understanding Short Passages) within each of the two groups were examined, a significant positive correlation was evident in the group of upper-grade elementary school students from multicultural families. Then receptive vocabulary skills of the upper-grade elementary school students showed the strongest correlation with the Word Comprehension subelement of the KISE-BAAT’s Reading Component, followed by the Sentence Arrangement, and the Understanding Short Passages subelements. However, no significant correlation with the Sentence Completion or the Vocabulary Choice was detected. A positive correlation between the receptive vocabulary skills and the reading comprehension skills was also discovered within the group of upper-grade middle school students from multicultural families. The receptive vocabulary skills of the middle school students showed the strongest correlation with the Understanding Short Passages subelement of the KISE-BAAT’s Reading Component, followed by the Word Comprehension, Sentence Arrangement, Vocabulary Choice and the Sentence Completion subelements.
From the above results, it can be inferred that children from multicultural families showed improvement in the receptive vocabulary and reading comprehension skills as they progress from upper grades at elementary school to middle school. Hence, to improve reading and comprehension skills of upper-grade elementary school students from multicultural families, it is necessary to focus on words and phrases that are useful in reading and comprehension. To enable middle school students from multicultural families to make a better use of their vocabulary skills in understanding short passages, it is important to teach them essential words and phrases along with providing guidance in reading short passages. It can also be concluded that improving receptive vocabulary skills will also improve reading and comprehension skills.
